Patrick O'Neill was born in Killear or Killare Parish, County Westmeath, Ireland in 1810. Killare is SouthEast of Ballymore and NorthWest of Steamstown. Patrick Neil (O'Neill) married Margaret Nowlan (Nolan) in Tubber and Rosemount Parish , Co. Westmeath on 19 February 1844. Witnesses John Cormick and Catherine Lynch. Their first 5 children appear to have been baptised in Ballymore Parish. No O'Neills were found in Griffiths Valuation in Killare Civil Parish in 1854, however several others were recorded in Co. Westmeath:
Additionally, a Hugh O'Neill was found in nearby Horseleap, Clonmacnoise Parish, Co. Offaly.
Patrick and Margaret Nolan O'Neill immigrated to Quebec between May 12 1852- July 12, 1852 with 5 children to join his older brother Thomas. Upon arrival in Quebec City, family legend says that Patrick rescued the wife of the mayor who was in a runaway horse carriage with her children. It is said that Patrick had only been in the country for a week and was now a hero. Legend says the mayor arranged for a job at a hotel in Montreal.
