Emily Carr: A Woman of All Sorts

Now celebrated painter and writer Emily Carr was a force of nature who rebelled against the Victorian constraints of British sensibilities in her otherwise beloved native city, Victoria, British Columbia. After studying fine art in San Francisco, London and Paris, she set off on a lifelong, often lonesome quest for creative fulfillment in the wilds of her Pacific Coast homeland and among its aboriginal peoples. Eccentric, fiercely independent, and unable to sell any of her paintings, she would put down her brushes for over a decade before being discovered by the Toronto Group of Seven whose support would help earn her the title of Canada's "Mother of Modern Art". Below, a short video primer on her life and work, presented by Seattle journalist Knute "Mossback" Berger.

The Pacific Northwest Folklore Society

Located in Seattle's University District, the Pacific Northwest Folklore Society was founded in 1953 by Walter Robertson, the "Dean of Northwest Folksingers", with the mission of preserving the rich heritage of the region's folklore and supporting its further development. The society's website provides ample information in the way of history, local event and performance listings, reviews and publications. Also featured is an engaging library of Northwest folk songs with recorded renditions by local artists.

Salute to Richard Gilkey

Painter and sculptor Richard Gilkey was a fourth-generation resident of Skagit County whose local roots ran deeper than the artist friends and colleagues who shaped the Northwest modern movement in the years that followed the Second World War, among them: Morris Graves, Mark Tobey, Guy Anderson, and Kenneth Callahan. Accordingly, Gilkey's work conveyed a style and consciousness of place that set him apart from his contemporaries.

Sam Green: Poetry as Life Vocation

During the 1980's, Sam Green joined wife Sally in answering the call to make poetry the defining force in their life together, a decision that would lead to Sam's being named Washington State Poet Laureate in December 2007. Along the way: moving to Waldron Island, building a log cabin, publishing and printing books of poetry, and sharing his insight and literary skills through formal classes and poetry workshops. From Evi Sztajno at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer; July 6, 2008.
