Pre-19th century  Replicas

I'll use this section for any calculator replicas that pre-date the 19th century.

I will consider linear rules as well, as they certainly were dominant after the early 17th century.

Background

For quite a while I had been interested in formulating a slide rule generator that could read a dictionary specification (how many scales, what kind of math function, tick patterns in each, etc.) and produce a good facsimile of the target.

In particular, the  Patent based models I had been working through are sufficiently similar that such an approach would make them a lot quicker to generate.

I found a generic approach impossible to accomplish in Pascal which was my go-to programming language.   I had a bit of success with Object Pascal but found it too cumbersome.   I eventually landed on Python, and I think this will be the one that works for me.

Early Calculators

I did also want to start to do replicas of 17th and 18th-century slide rules, both straight and circular styles.  That required my gaining experience with the lettering styles in vogue then.   The Oughtred Circles of Proportion will be the first published calculator where I'll use external dictionaries to define the scales.
