AP Biology
Course Description
AP Biology is a course that is commensurate to a first year biology course in college that focuses on four big ideas. Each big idea will be visited multiple times throughout the year, and each core concept will be revisited at least three times throughout the year to reinforce student understanding. Students are expected to spend an estimated 25% of their time in lab, so attendance and commitment to learning is essential. Please be aware of the work requirement and the dedication on the part of the student toward his/her own learning.
Learning Objectives
Students who successfully complete AP Biology will be competent in the following areas:
- Big Idea 1: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.
- Big Idea 2: Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain dynamic homeostasis.
- Big Idea 3: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes.
- Big Idea 4: Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties.
