Beginning GMAW: Metal 3D Puzzles

Software Used:

VCarve Pro

Any vector based design software will work to create the design/DXF file. Learning VCarve Pro will help you use other machines in the future.

Equipment Needed:

CNC Plasma - GMAW (Wire Feed)

The CNC Plasma table is a great place to start in the Fab Lab. Lessons learned here will transfer to other machines and design software. For specifics on G-code and machine controllers talk with Northwood Fab Lab employees.

Steps to complete this project:

Learn the rules and complete the following safety tests and demonstrations:
1. - General Lab Safety (Rules | Test)
  - Hand Tool Safety (Rules | Test)
  - Grinding Safety (Rules | Test)
  - Plasma Safety (Rules | Test)
  - Arc Welding Safety (Rules | Test)
Design your own puzzle pieces or export ready made VCarve Pro file to DXFs
Move you metal to the CNC plasma table (or have technicians help you with scrap material)
Use DXF file to create toolpaths for the CNC plasma table
Cut out your metal puzzle pieces using the CNC plasma table
Use wire wheels to clean up material being welded
STOP!!!! Have a fab lab technician ensure the welder equipment/gas are properly set up before moving on
Set up your material to be tacked/welded using the GMAW process
Discuss welds with fab lab technician
Once the welds are cool, use the spray booth to put a finish on your 3D puzzle
