TIPS FROM ANDREA HONINGSFELD:
* Start together at the beginning of each lesson as a show of unity.
* Two names go up everywhere and in letters to parents.
* Always break up into groups.
* Establish a routine; always end together.
* Use a common co-planning template.
* Co-Teachers change their pronouns from I to we.
* Incremental implementation; one grade level at a time to learn the curriculum
Eliminate the terms push-in and pull-out from your vocabulary; replace them with Integrated ENL and Stand-alone ENL.
A School-Wide Disciplinary Literacy Approach defines all teachers as teachers of literacy.

Effective in the fall of 2015, co-teaching became a part of the required new Units of Study for ELLs in New York State. Administrators, content
teachers and ENL teachers are becoming familiar with the new scheduling requirements and learning about the best practices for co-teaching for ELLs.
Andrea Honingsfeld and Maria G. Dove have written three books addressing co-teaching which includes many great ideas such as Seven Co-Teaching Models and forms including a Co-Teaching Planning Form and a Co-Teaching Observation Form. Virginia Rojas has also written extensively about co-teaching and ELLs.
The December-January issue of ASCD's Educational Leadership magazine features Co-teaching (Co-teaching-Making It Work), and the February 2016 issue is all about ELLs (Helping ELLs to Excel)!
