Spring 2025 Awards Ceremony for competitive testers was on April 27, 2025.
This year 846 students of chapter members from 29 schools who took Levels 2-4 of the National German Exam and 143 of them received gold medals. Nine students applied for the AATG-PAD NGE Scholarship, and we nominated four students to the national committee for that scholarship. Two of our nominees were among the 38 students from across the nation chosen for the trip to Germany. The Committee also recognized three students for our chapter collegiate award of excellence. In April the committee also received word that one student was among the eight students in the U.S. who received the NGE Post-Graduate Scholarship for graduating high school seniors. All these students were recognized with medals and prize bags at our chapter awards ceremony at COD on April 27, at which approximately 250 people heard from last year’s CLV and AATG-PAD scholarship winners, and the award winners are named below.
The Testing & Awards Committee expects the results of Levels 1 and 2A-4A of the National German Exam in the coming week. The medals for those students will be sent directly to their teachers by the end of May.
Congratulations and thanks to all of you
whose students took the NGE this year!
Please encourage your colleagues to become members of AATG (if they are not already) and to have their students take the exam.

The National German Exam is administered each year to almost 25,000 high school students of German. The exam, now in its 62st year, provides individual diagnostic feedback, rewards students through an extensive regional and national prize program, and creates a sense of accomplishment. Exam results provide teachers a means of comparing students in all regions of the country, as well as programmatic data to help inform curricular decisions.
The exam is delivered electronically and has four levels, each with the same format. The Level 2, 3, and 4 Exam is administered in the winter so qualifying students at or above the 90th percentile can apply for the AATG/PAD Study Trip Awards, a four-week study trip program to Germany. Students taking the Level 1 Exam have not had the requisite two years of language instruction to qualify for the AATG/PAD Study Trip Awards, which allows schools to administer the Level 1 Exam in the spring.
A description of the exam and its targeted proficiencies and a link to practice exams can be found at http://www.aatg.org/page/NGE
