Congratulations and thanks to all of you whose students took the NGE for Levels 2-4!

Their results should have arrived in your Lingco  account.  If they have not, you should contact the AATG national office.

This year our chapter had the second highest number nationwide of students who took the exam (second only to our neighbors in Indiana).  Of our 829 students who took the exam 121 scored at the gold level, 119 at the silver level, and 84 at the bronze level.  In other words, more than 10% of our students were in each of the top three percentiles!  Super gemacht!

Students who are NOT graduating seniors and who scored at or above the 90th percentile may be eligible to apply for the AATG/PAD National German Exam Scholarship for the summer study trip to Germany.  You will find all the eligibility requirements--including age and time spent in Germany--on the NGE webpage (nge.aatg.org). Please remember that, because we have so many eligible students and a very limited period of time to select our chapter nominees, our chapter will accept only ONE nominee per school.  We believe that you have much greater insight than the committee can gain in 15 minutes of conversation to decide which student would best represent your school and our chapter.

Applications are due online by February 19, and we will conduct our chapter interviews online on Sunday, February 25.  It would help the committee to plan our interview timeline if you could let us know that you are nominating a student, since we will receive no information from the national office until February 20.

There is also an award for graduating seniors who score at or above the 90th percentile and meet other eligibility criteria.  Applications for the NGE Post-Graduate Scholarship are submitted online and are due by March 22.

If you have any questions, please write to us at noilaatgawards@gmail.com

The National AATG office has just updated the calendar and announced a new NGE award for graduating high school seniors! Teachers should not expect to find their students' scores in their Lingco accounts until February 10 (two days later than previously announced). And there is a new NGE Post-Graduate Scholarship for high school students!!! Graduating seniors may fill out an application and submit a short essay on the AATG website to complete for cash prizes.  The amount and number of prizes will depend upon the number of seniors who take the exam. Details about eligibility and the application process can be found at aatg.org/page/NGESeniorScholarship.  The deadline for seniors to apply is March 23, 2023.  Good luck to all our graduating seniors.

2023 NATIONAL GERMAN EXAM AWARDS

On February 10, 2023, teachers should receive their students’ results from Levels 2-4 of the National German Exam in their Lingco accounts.  If you do not receive them, please contact the AATG national office directly, because NOIL AATG does not receive students’ scores by school, so we cannot help you.

This year students will again be able to apply for study trip prizes. Seniors are not eligible for the study trip prize, but there is a new award for graduating seniors who score at or above the 90the percentile, described below. This year our chapter nominee(s) to the national selection committee must again take another examination of German language proficiency during the period of March 6-15 as part of the national nomination process. This examination must be proctored by the teacher or a colleague. It cannot be proctored by a parent or guardian.

As usual we must ask that teachers select one candidate per school who best represents your German program.  Students in 28 schools in our chapter took the exam last year, and we simply cannot interview more students than that.  Students must apply online (aatg.org) by February 20, 2023.

We will hold our interviews via Zoom on Sunday, February 26, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please let us know as soon as possible whom your school has chosen as your nominee and if that student has any commitments on February 26 which we should try to accommodate in drawing up the schedule of interviews.

Please note that this year we will not receive the completed applications until after the deadline for submitting materials has passed. I will not be able to check applications as they come in before the deadline to be sure that everything is in order, so please urge your student to follow directions to the letter. Each year we get a blank application or two because students have not followed the instructions carefully. And please be sure to submit your recommendation via the national application link by the deadline!

Graduating seniors who score at or above the 90th percentile on the NGE are eligible for the NGE Post-Graduate Scholarship for high school students.  This award is a cash prize, and students must complete an online application and short essay by March 23, 2023. Complete information is available on the national AATG website, but the new page does not seem to be linked to the main NGE page, nor to the original NGE awards page: aatg.org/page/NGESeniorScholarship.

2022-2023 NGE Testing is underway...

Administration of the NGE for levels 2-4 is underway, but it isn't too soon to think about awards! As always, certificates for all levels of achievement will be available for download on the AATG website. We hope to hold an in-person awards ceremony in 2023, and the College of DuPage has graciously agreed to host us on April 30. Students who achieve at or above the 90th percentile will be invited and will receive small prizes. There will be national scholarships for summer study trips to Germany for students at or above the 90th percentile, with an application deadline of February 23. We have not been notified of the number of students our chapter may nominate, but we will have two scholarships to Concordia Language Villages to award. Thanks to the Swiss Benevolent Society for reserving one for our students!

IMPORTANT DATES

The National German Exam is administered each year to almost 25,000 high school students of German. The exam, now in its 62st year, provides individual diagnostic feedback, rewards students through an extensive regional and national prize program, and creates a sense of accomplishment. Exam results provide teachers a means of comparing students in all regions of the country, as well as programmatic data to help inform curricular decisions.

The exam is delivered electronically and has four levels, each with the same format. The Level 2, 3, and 4 Exam is administered in the winter so qualifying students at or above the 90th percentile can apply for the AATG/PAD Study Trip Awards, a four-week study trip program to Germany. Students taking the Level 1 Exam have not had the requisite two years of language instruction to qualify for the AATG/PAD Study Trip Awards, which allows schools to administer the Level 1 Exam in the spring.

A description of the exam and its targeted proficiencies and a link to practice exams can be found at http://www.aatg.org/page/NGE
