KAM
The Original Kantronics All-Mode.
The KAM (Kantronics All Mode) is a dual-port TNC that allows VHF packet operation on one port and HF data modes on the other.
Kantronics no longer support these older TNCs so it looks as if we have to be resourceful and maintain them ourselves. They would rather sell you a new KAM XL. I strongly suggest that you make a back-up of your firmware and put it in a safe place, because if your EPROM fails you will not be able to get a replacement.

If you have the Original KAM - white box with white/blue front panel, then the latest version you can use is V6.1 which adds the PACTOR 1 HF mode. This it contained in a 27C512 EPROM.
If your KAM has the Enhancement Board fitted, then you can use version 7.0 through to version 8.2. This added Kantronics GTOR HF mode with APRS packet facilities being added on V8.The firmware on the enhancement board requires a 27C1001 EPROM.
If you have the later KAM PLUS (white box with brown and cream front panel) then this runs firmware versions 7.0 through to 8.2.
Note that the KAM, KAME-E and KAM+ firmware is not interchangeable!
So you decided to take one apart? What can you expect to find lurking inside the box?
There isn't much holding the PCB inside the box, to remove, you remove the two screws holding the front panel and bezel.
Once you have removed the front panel then you need to remove the screw holding the tab of the voltage regulator to the case (on the right).
Note the two electrolytic capacitors at the front of the PCB in between the LEDS and the switches. These will eventually fail resulting in loss of the negative supply rail. The original ones are usually yellow, as you can see mine have been replaced.
This PCB is the original KAM - see the EPROM with version 6.1 firmware.
This one has the KAM ENHANCEMENT pcb fitted, with version 7.1 firmware. I have recently upgraded it to 8.2.
I finally got a copy of the elusive HMII+ to use with my KAMs.
I do not, and never have sold any TNC firmware on Ebay. Maybe whoever does has aquired the intelectual property rights. YMMV.
