Tutoring Protocols:
When tutoring a student, please continue to follow Howard County's guidelines:
Appropriate language and clothing
Be in a good quiet learning environment (ex: not in the car)
Be respectful towards the tutee
Confidentiality - please refrain from discussing sessions or tutees with other friends/members. If you feel uncomfortable with a student or there is an issue with the tutoring situation, contact Ms. Jandu or our officer team.
Tutoring sheet can be found on the NHS website (scroll down a little) or in the GHS library (@ the front counter)
MAX 3 hours of tutoring per day
Specifically if tutoring in the GHS library:
Sign in with either Ms. C-S or Ms. Hocker on their personal NHS sign-up sheet for the day (in addition to the one they sign for NHS records)
Sit only at the designated green tables while tutoring.
Times:
Some days, Ms. C-S and Ms. Hocker may need to limit the number of supervised tutoring sets to 6 sets or 12 people max (limited space some days), depending on their afterschool schedule of activities. In this case, a first-come, first-served rule will have to be honored.
The posted hours for the library closing each normal day Tues - Fri is 3:00 PM. If you wish to plan on staying longer, please check with Ms. C-S or Ms. Hocker first to see if they are planning on staying any later.
(The library is closed every Monday after school for meetings, and one Friday a month for Book Club!)
Glentutors - Contacting Students, Regulations
How to sign up for a tutor:
Check the tutoring sign-up form spreadsheet ( sent out in an email instead of on the website for confidentiality reasons ).
Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and look at the past few weeks in column I - the [NHS Member Tutor] column.
When you see an empty space, follow to the left across the row, and contact the email listed in column H about the student listed in column B and C. You can use an email template found here.
Wait for response!
Some other things to note:
Tutoring must be focused on an academic principal such as Math, Science, English, etc.
NHS is an academic scholarly society and the tutoring should be reflective of academics.
There is a maximum limit of 3 hours of tutoring a day.
Tutoring must be done in-person, unless the student or tutor is in quarantine
You cannot tutor members of your family - it isn't considered community service by NHS
Tutoring sheet must be signed and/or stamped by librarian / adult supervisor for proof of tutoring session and turned in to an officer or Ms. Jandu
NOTE: Adult supervisor cannot be related to the tutor or the tutee.
You must check-in with the adult supervising your session before your start and after you end
Note: Please try to fill in all the tutor spots of the past 2 weeks! We want to help as many students who need it.
FQMS Tutoring Academies
Folly Quarter Middle School is holding Tuesday and Wednesday Tutoring Academies (essentially group tutoring sessions) every week. On those days, right after school at 2:35 pm, FQMS students come for help with schoolwork and general tutoring, and Glenelg provides the mentors needed to help out. So if you are available for any of these sessions, you can just show up, although we prefer if you can email us beforehand just in case!
