2019-2020

NEIGHBORS AND NEWCOMERS OF CUMBERLAND COUNTY MINUTES OF JANUARY 23, 2020

Neighbors and Newcomers of Cumberland County meeting of January 23, 2020 was held at Thunderbird Recreation Center, 106 Deer Run Circle, Crossville, TN.

The meeting was called to order at 11:30 AM by President Brenda LaVigne. 96 members, 7 guests present.

OLD BUSINESS: Motion was made by Jan Elwood, seconded by Nancy Clore to accept the secretary’s report. Motion was made by Susan Wilson, seconded by Carolyn Boyle to accept the treasurer’s report. Notice was given that we must suspend running a 50/50 raffle as it does not conform with Tennessee laws. Discussed that we will need to find some new creative ways of replacing the funds we made from the raffle, which constitutes a loss of approximately $1,200.00 per year. A thank you from the president for all who participated in one of our fundraisers last month. Approximately $875.00 was raised between the Mini Silent Auction, Cookie sales, 50/50 and Ugly Sweater Contest, along with a generous cash donation from the members of $968.00 and the many, many clothing and toy items brought in and bought for our Christmas family at House of Hope. Thank you’s were also made to Shirley Butka, Judy Edwards, Lucille Kelly, Betty Andrews, Robbie Corben and Brenda LaVigne for shopping for and delivering gifts to House of Hope for our Christmas family. Work continues on the website. May have to hire a web designer and we’re looking into acquiring a new domain name. Constitution and by-law committee continue to meet.

NEW BUSINESS: The Constitution and By-Law committee have been working diligently to update our Constitution and By-Laws. Currently the Constitution and By-Laws are in one document. We are attempting to clarify the governance of our club and the roles and responsibilities of the officers and chairpersons in our By- Laws. Separating the Constitution and the By-Laws will allow for needed future changes to the By-Laws without voting to change the entire Constitution. Therefore, a motion was made by Terri Curran, seconded by Cindy Leckvarick.

The motion was read by Terri Curran and stated: “I move that, in the interest of being able to make changes as necessary in coming years to the Constitution and By-Laws of Neighbors and Newcomers of Cumberland County, that we separate the Constitution and By-Laws into two separate documents.” The motion passed by a vote of 93 Yays, 3 Nays. Voting done by 96 paying dues members. 2/3 vote of dues paid members was required for passage. Fliers were placed on all tables of information and donations for our Live Auction at our May 28, 2020 meeting. Members were asked to bring in their items in February, March or April. Members are asked to try and bring a guest for the auction meeting. Nominations will take place in March for the new club year with elections taking place in April. Our service project for this month of supplies or cash donations are for Plateau Pregnancy. Jan Elwood was taking fundraising monies for purchase of cinnamon rolls from Dinky Doo’s. Payment at this meeting for delivery at February meeting. It was brought to everyone’s attention that if you make a reservation and do not cancel by the meeting notice date you are expected to pay for your lunch. Please make check payable to N & N and send to the P.O. Box 1835, Fairfield Glade. The club cannot afford to take the loss on no shows. If 4 people do not pay that reserved a spot we lose $60.00! We have already lost 50/50 and cannot take that kind of loss. Legends and The Clyde York Center have requested that we remind the membership that they do not give out to-go boxes. It’s a health code violation for them to do so. If you want to take your lunch home bring your own container. Therefore, you are accepting responsibility for the safety of your own food. Also, it is impossible to make luncheons that are suitable for every dietary concern. Please don’t ask the staff for special items from their kitchens. We have contacts with our vendors and they supply what is on reservation announcement. If you don’t eat what is served you are still required to pay for your reservation. The club received thank you notes form House of Hope, Peavine Care Center, St. Alphonsus Community Services and the Bryant Symphony Orchestra.

INVOCATION/LUNCH: Invocation was given by Jan Elwood. Lunch of roast beef, chicken, mashed potatoes, herb roasted mixed vegetables, garden salad, vanilla or chocolate cupcakes, and sweet/unsweet tea, coffee and water was provided by Tansi Caterers, David and Jennifer King.

Jan Elwood approved and Sue Czysz seconded the request.

Bryce McDonald, Producing Director of the Cumberland County Playhouse, introduced the singers who entertained us. He had each of them answer a question related to Christmas. Makenna’s question was, “ What was the worst Christmas present she had ever received?”

She said it was a Redskin shirt from her Mother rather one from a team she’s a fan of, the Dallas Cowboys. She sang “Hallelujah” and “Cold December Night.” Makenna sings at the Playhouse and is a dance teacher of hip hop 2 and ballet there. Her Mother was a dance teacher. Matthew’s question was, “Have you ever opened a gift that you hated and what did you say?” His reply was, “Oh, thank you so much.” He played the guitar and sang “I’ll Be Home For Christmas.” Another lady sang “O Holy Night” and “Santa Baby.” She owns a weight loss support business located near Gondolas Restaurant in the Woodmere Mall. Her question from Bryce was, “Have you ever re-gifted something to someone else?” She answered No, because she told us she actually did not know about the concept! Her daughter, Keira Crosby, attended our meeting also. She was an actress in performances of Matlilda. Keira has a powerful voice for someone so young.

Before the meeting began ladies bid on Silent Auction vintage Longaberger baskets and some kleenex box holders filled with Christmas goodies such as candy, chocolates, tins of butter cookies, tea, etc. Brenda thanked Paula Ochoa and Barb Patterson for making the auction items look like “Christmas gifts to go.” by adding festive ribbons and bows. Board members each brought 3-4 dozen Christmas cookies which we sold as a fundraiser for the club. Gift items or money was collected for our needy families at Christmas time. Donations for House of Hope is a project directed by Shirley Butka, and ladies volunteer to meet and go shopping with her. Paula Ochoa sold lovely artificial floral holiday arrangements, along with long potholder gloves filled with Christmas decorations. $112.00 was received from members who had worn something for Halloween to the October meeting. $641.50 was collected for turkeys distributed to five different charities. Gnome decorations on the tables today were offered for $7.00. Today $5.00 was donated by anyone who had worn an ugly Christmas sweater. Lesa Thompson was voted to be wearing the ugliest Christmas sweater and won a small gift.

Barb Brust led us in the Invocation prayer. The meal consisted of a generous sized piece of meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, yeast rolls, a salad and an apple crisp. Linda Andrews, Caring Committee, told us that member Rosemary Gildemeister has passed away after having an oral surgery procedure. She reminded us to be sure to let her committee know of any health issues of members so that cards may be sent. Linda read about Christmas

from a woman’s point of view.

Cheryl Adams introduced four guests: Ruth Werderitch, Dotti Brooks, Judy Suzenagr, and Mary Ann Hoffman. Dotti received the guest gift. Cheryl said we have seven new members. On Monday December 2 Shirley Butka had organized a trip to the Tennessee Theatre’s Magical Musical Monday. They had lunch afterwards. December birthdays were recognized, and Jan Gillespie won the gift. $30.00 each went to five lucky 50/50 winners. $302 was collected with half of that going to the Club’s treasury. CUMBERLAND COUNTY NEIGHBORS AND NEWCOMERS CLUB MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 26, 2019

Cumberland County Neighbors and Newcomers Club meeting of September 26, 2019 was held at the Cumberland County Covenant Health Medical Center. The speakers for today talked to us before our luncheon meal. April VonAchen, Chief Financial Officer, gave us an update on the hospital. It has been a member of the Covenant Health System for 5 years. The program today concerned Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Desiree Roach, Nurse Navigator, serves as a facilitator of information between doctors and patients. She informed us both the 2D and 3D Mammography is available now at the hospital and at the Fairfield Glade clinic. She explained everything available at the Breast Center.

The Invocation was given by Barb Brust prior to our meal of meat or veggie lasagna, garden salad and a brownie. Brenda LaVigne, Co President, thanked past Board members for their service to the club last year. She said she is looking forward to working with the new Board for a productive year. Brenda thanked Cindy Leckvarcik for putting together our new pink club’s yearly brochure. Those were placed on the tables for each of us.

OLD BUSINESS: Jan Elwood moved we approve the minutes of the May meeting. Lynne Lynch seconded the motion. Motion carried. Brenda reminded us that when making a reservation if you do not cancel by the date on the meeting announcement you will be charged as a no show. If a guest does not show up and has not cancelled in time, you will be responsible for their meal. The one to call is our Reservations Chair, Robbie Corbin. Name tags can be purchased at Plateau Office Supply for about $10.

NEW BUSINESS: This month we brought items requested for school nurses and counselors, as well as collecting money for this today. Next month we will be collecting money for turkeys for needy families. Dues are $13; payment is due by the October meeting. Brenda said someone else is needed to help with Reservations. Deb Ryan volunteered to help Robbie. Someone else is still needed for Nominations. Barb Patterson, a new member and guest, volunteered to help with Decorations. The Board decided to no longer be selling tee shirts as a fundraiser and will sell the current inventory. Brenda said the club’s website needs to be updated. She wondered who set it up and found out it was Aimee McDonald. She asked if anyone has expertise in this area to work on it, but no one responded they could do this. Brenda wants to begin a focus group to work on it. She would like to form a committee to review and update our ByLaws and Constitution. These ladies volunteered to serve in that capacity: Cindy Lecvarcik, Shirley Butka, Brenda LaVigne, Jan Elwood, Billie Mitchell and Terri Curran We have obtained a new P.O. Box at the Fairfield Glade Post Office. Its number is 1835. The Senior President and Treasurer will have the keys for it. It is a possibility that next year the cost of lunches and dues may increase. All vendors went up this year. Bremda said fundraising ideas are needed. The cost of a Fortes cream puff is now $3.45. They were $2.00 last year. Only 7 people were interested in having them as a fundraiser at the increased cost of $4.00 each. So we probably will not be offering them this year. Brenda has talked to Dinky

Doos about buying their cinnamon rolls, possibly at $1.75 each, maybe 2 for $5.00. Also a possibility is selling their little cream pies. This might be a fundraiser in February. Brenda suggested members who want to dress up for Halloween at our October meeting pay $5.00 or those who do not dress up can also pay $5.00. Our Auction will once again be in May with Lesa Thompson in charge of it. We may have an auctioneer for it. Brenda wants us to bring in items for the auction during this year to any of our monthly meetings. She told us $800 or so was taken in on the auction last year.
