It is such a pity it is not sometimes fully appreciated.
In particular we had a sad news today.
Elizabeth called to say that she saw some one in the morning loading some of the new logs from the loggery on a white van.
These were the one that we collected from the felling of the sycamore in the main area of Surrey Square Park last autumn.
The tree surgeons were kind enough to give us the logs and even a lift to transport them on the WLA.
It would have been a pity to loose such good wood, a wood that we knew well. We hoped that the loggery would make a good ground for expanding the number of Lesser stag beetle (Dorcus parallelipipedus) and maybe in future to attract their larger cousins the more renowned Stag beetles (Lucanus cervus).
Beautiful logs at that.
Julian as usual was there to lend an hand and we all felt we did a good thing.
The log would have been otherwise taken away and shredded or dumped in some other park.We felt that the least they could do is leaving it here.
The park lack old trees and any available should be used as much as possible.
It is only logical and wasteful to let the chance of getting hold of some valuable resource for free slip by.
Many times we asked the Parks authorities the chance to have large logs or trunks, like the one that have been felled in Burgess Park during the recent and ongoing renovation.
We could have used that as fences or seat or in a number of other ways but we were unsuccessful and nothing ever came out of our requests.
So it is doubly galling that even the little we have is taken away.
Elizabeth managed to unsettle the thief by shouting at him.
After a short attempt to justify himself, "I thought they were dumped here..." he quickly departed.
Few signs, showing that the Wild Life Area is part of the park, would probably have not deterred him but it would have help if were to call the Wardens or the cops.
Still we have quite a few older woods in the loggery and let be glad about it.
