In the hight of summer it is generally better to leave the Wild Life Area to his own.
It is all right to visit but avoiding large disturbances is advisable.
Still sometimes cannot be avoided. This microcosms of nature is plum in the middle of hostile territory, inevitably therefore damage will accrue from time to time (actually is a wander that the place is still here at all!!).
In this case there have been a bit of fly-tipping (or rather someone has gone an put down a lots of cardboards, in the past there was also a little prostitution going on in Albridge Street at night, of all places). It is bad both because it cover ground, taking it away from the vegetation, it produces undesirable chemicals when decompose and encourage whatever activities have made someone bring the cardboard there.
So with Alison we came down to to do a little remedial work.
The place is in full bloom. Lots of vegetation and insect activity.
Even the relatively newly formed earth embankments are being colonised by eager ruderals.
We spot a comma butterfly ( Polygonia c-album) that has not been a frequent visitor to our small patch of countryside.
In this warm weather flowers are everywhere and pollination is in full swing.
So much so that on this poor Spear Thistle (Cirsium vulgare)
the bee is completely covered with pollens.
This year has been a particular abundant year for 7-spot ladybird (Coccinella 7-punctata) and lots of the orange pupae are all over the place, to mine and Alison interest.
Also very encouraging in view of the loggery the Friends of Surrey Square Park established some time ago fungi are starting to get hold. This turkey tail mushroom (Trametes versicolor) is really gone to town on this old stump.
Satisfied with what we have seen Alison and I do our duty and live the place in peace.
