In March 20011The Friends of Surrey Square Park had few bird-boxes built by Julian as part of a program to teach children at a local school how to put together them, their use etc..
Julian is a good carpenter and did a good job with the little money available.
Anyway the result was we had a number of boxes available and we thought that other then try to give the lot to some other organisation we could use them ourselves in our little park.
So a bright morning we went around Surrey Square and we managed to fix them all in the places we had previously decided were the most suitable.
By the way the boxes were made were possible with recycled material and there was some care to make them as eco-friendly as possible.
Prominently we put some of them in the Wild Life Area:
and as usual the occasion was a good starting point to explain local kids what we were doing.
We put few on the fence of the Kick-about Court and generally try to place out of reach of marauding hands.
In this we were mostly successful but it is always sobering to remember that we live in a rough area and all of us at some point even not in this specific occasion, run the risk to be attacked for having told off someone vandalising the green.
in any case the memorial garden, the enclosed area in the north-east corner of the park, was another favourite spot for bird nesting a we put several ones there too.
The memorial garden has some nice flowers and bush, ideal for a lot of small birds.
The reminder were place here and there. But we generally agreed that it will be sometimes before we can find out if the nesting has improved the bird population in the park.
