From 1998 onward, the local charity Groundwork Southwark (the charity incorporate itself in a larger entity in 2007 and it is now, 2021, called GROUNDWORK SOUTHWARK & LAMBETH Company number 03045195) first through instigating a Steering Committee and then by obtaining a licence to run the park on behalf of Southwark Council, receiving a limited financing from the local authority in exchange for obligations to raise a minimum amount of supplementary funding.

Amongst the improvement to the park it managed to create the playground (with some controversy on the assignment of contracts), improved the Peter Martin Memorial Garden, the mural on the back of the off-licence on the corner of Surrey Square Grove and tiles along the perimeter wall of the Aladura Church (both now mostly dilapidated), some planting and fetes. The creation of the Baseball Court, was made independently (If I recollect correctly) from a funding bid from the Kinglake tenants & Residents Association (as it renewal works, years later).
