The Brothers

Zell am Harmersbach to Holywell

by Paul Matthew Schwarz

Anton stayed in Holywell and forged a business empire. At one point, there were four Schwarz shops in the town:

* A.Schwarz & Sons - Opticians - at 7 Whitford Street

* A.Schwarz & Sons - Jewellers - at 5 & 7 Whitford Street

* A.Schwarz & Sons - Toys & Fancy Goods - at 63 High Street

* G & T Schwarz - Bakers & Confectioners - at 1-3 Whitford Street

Today only the optician's remains, but it is only in the last 20 years that the other businesses have disappeared.

Augustin moved to Flint which is only a few miles down the road from Holywell and set up a small business on Chester Street. Augustin had 3 daughters, one of them was the post-mistress in Flint for some years.

Leonhard moved to Glasgow and set up his own small business. I find his family the most interesting because after he died almost all of his family went to the USA after the outbreak of the First World War. Around 1920 one of Leonhard's sons, Anthony, came back to the UK and resettled in Glasgow with his family.

I will devote a page to each of the brothers to give more detail.
