This photo was taken by Sherman Shook on Oct. 20th, 1952, four months after the modernized junction became operational. Sherman lived across from the playground where I got to watch a lot of trains when growing up.
LV eastbound symbol freight BJ-4 (Buffalo-Jersey City) passes through the junction as CNJ's CJ-2 (Scranton-Jersey City) holds for the Stop signal. This photo was on the cover of the August 2013 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman, which also contained my article on modeling the junction and tower.
The CNJ caboose is crossing over the diamond.
A cantilever signal bridge protects the LV west side of the junction.
This signal bridge is patterned after the four track eastbound home signal which was located northeast of Franklin Jct..
Franklin tower sits adjacent to the Division Street road crossing with working flashers and crossing bell.
The tower operator watches as the LV Wilkes-Barre yard switcher approaches the junction.
