Joseph was born on November 16, 1896 to Rudolph and Mary Vay. He was only 13 years old when his father passed away in 1910. Joseph registered for World War I on June 5, 1918. At that time he worked for General Railway Signal Company. Joseph served in World War I and he was the first commander of the Keith Miller Post 6595 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In 1930 Joseph and Cecilia were living with Joseph's mother, Mary, and his two brothers, Edward and Norbert. Joseph was a hardware salesman.
Joseph started working for his brother, Norbert, in 1931 at the Norbert E. Vay Funeral Home. When they opened a second home on Dewey Avenue in 1968, Joseph and Cecilia lived upstairs at that home. Joseph and Cecilia had a son named Joseph.
Joseph passed away on September 17, 1978 and Cecilia on July 01, 1992. They are both buried in the Rudolph Vay family plot at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
