Situated on the River Bach, on the edge of the Cursed Marshes, Fauligmere is nominally part of the state of Middenland. “Nominally,” in that its lord, Baron von Stauffer, owes his fealty to the Elector Count of Middenland and holds his lands at the Elector’s sufferance, but the von Stauffer’s haven’t paid their taxes in several years.
That Fauligmere even exists is testament to the stubbornness of Middenlanders. Once a healthy, if not prosperous fishing village, Fauligmere’s fortunes have declined so far in the past twenty years that some whisper the town must be under some sort of curse. The fish have vanished, and nothing more than a sickly mollusk or bloated, belly-up trout has been pulled from the Bach in years. Fauligmere has gone from merely backward to downright impoverished, but the people of Fauligmere refuse to leave and cling stubbornly to their way of life.
A wooden palisade surrounds Fauligmere except along its eastern side, which is protected by the river itself. The palisade is patrolled by several of the militias employed by Baron Eldred. They are equipped with long bows, clubs and leather armor.
The palisade has two small gates, one to the west and one to the south. These doors are used by hunters who venture into the marshes to look for swamp octopus.
The main mode of transport used by the villagers to enter and leave Fauligmere is in small boats, usually rowing boats. A series of rickety piers stand out in the river, with a number of boats moored to them. This is usually the first place visitors arrive.
The central feature of the village is the Manann Temple, which was built from the remains of an old shipwrecked galleon. Its inverted oak bow castle forms the main body of the temple, and a sturdy wooden bell tower rises above the entrance, crowned by the ship's stern castle. A mermaid figure looms over the double doors that lead to the temple. Inside, the portholes allow the rays of daylight to illuminate the atrium, with the specs dancing in the sun's rays like tiny schools of fish. The high and arched roof is decorated with nets. The benches are facing the altar, a block of coral with Manann's crown engraved.
In front of the temple is the town square. During the day, the echo of the hammer on the metal sounds from the blacksmith's village. In the center of the square stands a granite column crowned by the worn sculpture of a fist that holds a hammer. A well-polished bronze plaque proclaims the strength of the divine Sigmar.
To the south of the temple is a solid wooden inn with a patio and outbuildings. The sign above the door represents three wild boars running on a yellow background. The inn is spacious and well furnished. A pleasant aroma of tobacco smoke and beer permeates the common room. A few villagers relax here, taking time from their daily routine. They usually exchange their drinks with swamp octopus tentacles. The owner, Tomas de Goede, is usually found behind the bar.
Tomas is a man in his forties, with thick ginger sideburns and laughing eyes. He has the natural ability to reassure most people, like his lovely wife, Emma. His four young daughters, Elise, Ingrid, Linde and Miriam, and their eldest son, Karel, help their parents manage the place and brew beer in the backyard. The family is generous and with a big heart. All rooms cost only one silver coin per night, which includes breakfast and usually a simple but satisfying dinner. A pitcher of beer or wine costs from a few bronze coins to a shilling
