Since we entered SIP around spring break I was never really able to implement anything into my class that was easy to do. With students having many technology issues including internet connection and the lack of an electronic device, it made class difficult just to do basic things. I think the thing I would have liked to implement more is our use of Labster which is an online virtual lab with possibly some VR attachments. It would be great to use some 3D printing so that students could have something to physically touch and see after doing one of these labs.
Now that I have successfully swam instead of sinking to the bottom of my first year of teaching, I have a lot more time to prepare lessons and labs. I found a lot of my labs were amazingly successful this year but there were definitely a few units of boring labs the students definitely did not enjoy. I took a survey at the end of the year to see what worked and what didn't and will take that into account for next year's classes.
I would like to use Google Sites to have my own website for next year as the Google Classroom wasn't sufficient enough for parent/guardians of students. I also would like to start getting my idea of anatomy and physiology off the ground at Santa Rosa High School so that students can be better prepared for the future if they are to go into studying animal/human biology or other healthcare field.
In five years I may continue to teach at the high school level which is both likely and also unlikely as college jobs may open up at the neighboring SRJC and SSU. If I am still teaching at SRHS I will probably have my Anatomy and Physiology class up and running and hopefully be teaching students who are more dedicated. I thoroughly enjoyed my freshmen class of Living Earth this year due in part to their knowledge, interest and creativity exhibited in class. This class although not classified as accelerated was clearly gifted as 90% received either an A or a B in class. I hope by five years of teaching I have things streamlined but not set in stone if something amazing comes along.
I am hoping that I can leverage Project Based Learning at the Buck Institute for the future. I find that a lot of my students enjoy projects that they can work on for a period of time and seem to learn a lot more than normal direct instruction. If that is the case I would need to take classes at the Buck Institute on what and how to implement for life sciences and hopefully for anatomy and physiology as well!
