20121102 Retrival of The Nest Boxes from the Memorial Garden

Because the Memorial Garden will be reshaped by the final part of the Open Spaces Fund works it was decided to remove some of the bird-boxes we put in the area last year.

So with Julian, the most reliable guy on the planet, we set out in the morning to retrieve what we could with the intention of refurbishing and repositioning them at some future time.

It proved difficult to dislodge the first of the boxes. They had been well build by Julian himself using recycled wood and materials and the first one was difficult to remove. Infact it will need some repairs. When we looked inside we were not surprised in the least to see that the nested mosses and twigs lining the inside showed it had been well used.

The last we retrieved was fortunately easier to dislodge but was fairly high up. Interesting it had not been used for nesting. The position was all right and the box sound but still... It is some times puzzling but one has to remember that there imponderables that no one can foresee. Maybe the position was too noisy or frequented by an all too inquisitive squirrel or simply was redundant. We know that the same type of box has been used by different species in different area of the park, so we are not too worried.

Last we had a look at another box that will be staying put and that was nested too.

Job done!!
