Having a good vocabulary is a key part of reading and writing. Our books are filled with wonderful words, and as new writers we want to be able to use those words in our own writing. One of the ways we help build our students' reading and writing levels is by making vocabulary a high priority. Every Tuesday and Thursday your child will learn a new vocabulary word. These words are words that are commonly used and seen in the books we read and in the world around us. Every student is responsible for keeping these words on a book ring, which will be kept in their book baggie.
Students are responsible for knowing and using these words correctly on a daily basis. We hope to see them in their writing and hear them being used in conversations. *A great way to practice using these words is to try and use one or two of them when writing sentences for the spelling homework. There will also be periodical quizzes throughout the year on these words (students will not be penalized for not spelling these words correctly, they are only responsible for knowing the meaning of the word).
As a way to encourage the class to use these words more often, we will use these words as our Bingo Lingo words. Every time a child comes across one of our vocabulary words in a book or anywhere in print and can give us the correct definition, they will earn the class a tally on the Bingo Lingo board. Students can also earn these tallies by using the words correctly in conversation or in their writing (both in class or at home). In the past we even had students bring in objects like empty/clean juice containers with a vocabulary word on it or even sent us pictures of signs they saw while out with their family. All are acceptable ways to earn tallies, but remember you must know the correct meaning of the word.
Below we will be keeping a list of the words that we have learned so far in class. Please check this list often and review these words with your child often. The more they see them, hear them and use them, the more they will become apart of their natural vocabulary. **Each vocabulary word will either be a noun, adjective or verb.
