Toilet Paper Tube Challenge

Purpose: To construct an object, using all the required materials, that takes as long as possible to free-fall from the overhead walkway to the floor of the multipurpose room.

Materials: One toilet paper tube Resources: class scissors

50 cm of clear cellotape rulers

One piece of regular copy paper NO GLUE

Procedure: 1. Brainstorm design ideas with your classmates. Support your ideas with examples from the real world.

2. Construct your object using all of the tube, all of the paper, and all of the tape. Nothing more may be added, nothing may be left over.

3. Carefully write your full name and the block on an exposed area of the object.

4. Draw a labelled, scale diagram of your object on the back of this sheet. Include dimensions in cm.

5. Give an explanation of your key design choices below the diagram. Why did you engineer it the way you did? How did you ensure that it will fall as slow as possible through the air?

Data:

Discussion: On your own paper, compare and contrast the various designs you saw in the class. What designs did the best? Which did the worst? What variables seem to be the most important for preventing the object from falling quickly? Sketch a diagram for the “ultimate” design; one that could be made if time was unlimited, materials were ideal, etc.
