Ecology Project 2017

You will be required to research an invasive plant and animal in BC and produce a Google Slides Presentation with the following information:

  1. Identification: What are the common names, scientific description, appearance, identifying characteristics, etc. etc.
  2. Origin: Where is it from originally, and what are the ecological characteristics of its natural home.
  3. Arrival and Spread: How did it first get here? How is it spread? How are humans influencing its spread?
  4. Competition: Which native species are being displaced? Why? What advantages does the foreign species have? Does anything eat it? Does it get any diseases, or suffer from any parasites found here?
  5. Habitat Alteration: How does the invasive species change the habitat when it becomes abundant in an area? How does this affect the native species? Which native species are at risk because of habitat alteration caused by the invasive species?
  6. Recovery: What must be done to reduce the negative effects on native habitats and native species. What is being done right now? How can the average person help?
  7. Future? If climate change continues, will the invasive species benefit? Why? What might Maple Ridge look like if we do nothing?
