THE COURSE: Math Studies is a fourth year honors math course for those students who have successfully completed the Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry courses with a C or better. Math Studies is an International Baccalaureate (IB) course concentrating on applied mathematics making connections on previously learned concepts as well as introducing other applied mathematics. The course includes a project paper that must be submitted to receive a grade for the course. The TI-83 graphing calculator will be an integral part of this course. TI-83 calculators will be available for in-class use but the purchase of one is strongly recommended. The course will consist of class work, daily homework, projects, quizzes, and tests. All students will be issued a textbook, which become the student’s responsibility. You will need to bring your book to class everyday as well as using it for homework.
HOMEWORK: Homework will be given daily. The homework assigned is given to reinforce the concepts that we are currently studying and to also review topics that we have studied in the past. There will usually be time in class to begin the homework but what is not finished will be due the next day. Late homework will be accepted within the week for partial credit. I would periodically rather have a completed late assignment rather than an incomplete on-time assignment. Homework should be handed in with the student’s name and period as well as the page number from the textbook.
RULES: 1) Follow Directions
2) Be Courteous To Others
3) Follow All School Rules
ATTENDANCE: Attendance is important in order to succeed in this class. If a student is absent it is that students responsibility to ask the teacher, or another student to find out what was missed and to promptly make up the work. If a test is missed the teacher will arrange a time to make up the test.
CITIZENSHIP: Citizenship is how each student acts in the classroom. This does not affect academic grades. Each student may change their citizenship grade by his or her own actions in the classroom.
CHARACTER STATEMENT: Students of RBV will demonstrate Good Character on and off campus. Each student is Trustworthy and consistently shows Respect and Responsibility to themselves and others. They are Fair and Caring in all their actions and model appropriate Citizenship.
COURSE CURRICULUM: There are six general topics.
Numbers & Algebra: Number sets, approximations, significant figures, scientific notation, accuracy and measurement, sequences and series, interest.
Sets & Logic: Translate between verbal and symbolic statements and to use the principles of logic to analyze these statements.
Statistics & Probability: Enable students to analyze random events and to develop techniques to describe and analyze sets of data. The normal curve, regression analysis/modeling, and contingency tables. Enhance awareness of the statistical method and to provide possible tools for the Project Paper. The TI-83 will be very useful.
Functions: Develop understanding of functions which can be applied to practical situations.
Geometry & Trigonometry: Develop spatial awareness and the ability to draw clear diagrams. Apply trigonometrical techniques to problem solving. Trig Star competition.
Introductory Differential Calculus: Differentiation and Integration.
TARDY POLICY:
1st – 2nd Offense – In-class teacher consequences
3rd Offense - Teacher Contacts Parent
4th Offense - Teacher refers student to the alpha Assistant Principal
Sincerely,
Mr. Keeping
