THE COURSE: This math class will cover topics that will give the student algebraic skills so that they may continue in more complex math classes. The course will consist of class work, daily homework, projects, quizzes, and tests. All students will be issued a textbook, which becomes the student’s responsibility. The textbook can remain at home because I have 17 copies in the classroom.

COURSE CURRICULUM: Algebra 1 California Content Standards

1.0 properties of numbers

2.0 roots, fractions, exponents, and reciprocals.

3.0, 5.0 solving equations, including multistep.

4.0 simplifying expressions.

6.0, 7.0 graphing linear equations and inequalities.

8.0 slopes and equations of parallel and perpendicular lines.

9.0 solving systems of equations.

10.0 add, subtract, multiply and divide monomials and polynomials.

11.0 factoring.

12.0 Simplifying fractions with polynomials.

13.0 add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational expressions.

14.0 quadratic equations, including completing the square.

15.0 rate problems.

16.0 relation vs. function

17.0, 18.0 domain and range.

19.0, 21.0, 22.0, 23.0 graphing/solving quadratic formula including real world problems

20.0 quadratic formula

24.3, 25.1 finding counterexamples

25.1, 25.2, 25.3 construct simple valid arguments, direct and indirect, judge the validity of arguments.

HOMEWORK: Homework will be given almost daily. The homework assigned is given to reinforce the concepts that we are currently studying and to also review topics that we have studied in the past. There will usually be time in class to begin the homework but what is not finished will be due the next day. Late homework will be accepted within the week for partial credit. Homework should be handed in with the student’s name and period as well as the page number from the textbook.

ATTENDANCE: Attendance is important in order to succeed in this class. If a student is absent it is that students responsibility to ask the teacher or another student to find out what was missed and to promptly make up the work. If a test is missed it is the also student’s responsibility to ask the teacher when to arrange a time to make up the test.

CITIZENSHIP: Citizenship is how each student acts in the classroom. Academic grades are not affected by this. Each student may change their grade by their own actions in the classroom.
