Learning Recommendations: Students must either be enrolled in a yearlong music ensemble class (choir, orchestra, or band.) Additionally, students are required to attend weekly after-school music seminars on Tuesdays from September through May.
General Description: This course prepares students for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Music exams and is ideal for those pursuing an IB certificate or using IB Music as an elective in their IB Diploma. Students engage in a comprehensive study of music theory, history, and analysis through weekly seminar sessions, while also developing skills in musical perception and performance. Participation in a music ensemble or related music course is mandatory, alongside after-school seminars.
Content:
Study of music history from various cultures and time periods
Music theory and analysis
Musical perception, including elements, form, and structure
Performance in group or solo settings
Exploration of music composition and creation through recording and portfolio development
Homework: Students can expect 2-4 hours of homework per week, including preparation for performances, research projects, and music analysis.
Course Fees / Materials: IB exam fees apply, and students are responsible for ensemble-related costs such as outfits and field trips. Financial concerns can be discussed with the ASB bookkeeper or counselor.
Equipment to be provided by Student: Students need earbuds or headphones, a personal musical instrument, and a USB flash drive.
