Foster Freeze

This photo of Menlo Park's Foster Freeze, dated July 1963, was recently donated to MPHA by the O'Keefe family. It's a little dark, but perhaps you can see that the business next door (to the east) was Johnny's Smoke Shop. Foster Freeze (it was originally called Foster's Freeze) first appears in the Polk Directories at 580 Oak Grove in 1950, so the structure was probably constructed about 1949, about the time soft ice cream was first introduced in the U.S. It is still a popular spot, especially among Menlo Park teenagers.
