Meeting Notes by Kristen Hayer, Secretary |
November 8, 2012
Hi MOB, Here's the scoop from the meeting this evening... Michelle, Elisa, Lori, Danielle, Megan, Jessica, Jennifer and Kristen were at NaNa's Kitchen, along with guest speaker Cliff Lentz (Mayor). Cliff
spoke to the group about a variety of city services and initiatives
including the economic development subcommittee, the Sierra Point
development project, the school district survey, and ideas related to
the teen center. Cliff reminded us that all subcommittee meetings are
open to the public, and you can find the meeting calendar on the city
website (http://www.ci.brisbane.ca.us/ -
go to the City Government section and look under "All Meetings"). If
you'd like more specifics on any of these topics please feel free to
reach out to the board members who attended. Upcoming Events (see MOB calendar for updates): 11/14 - Playground build day (if you want to bring some food or snacks to the park for the workers it would be appreciated!) 11/15 - Nail Night, 7-9pm (again, snacks and drinks welcome) 11/28 - MOB Bingo Night, Community Center (more info to come, but I am so excited!!!) 12/5 - MOB Hike, Laurelwood Park, San Mateo, 10am-1pm (more info to come) 1/13 - Food Bank Volunteer Event (more info to come) Other Agenda Items:
If you have any questions or would like to add something I've missed, please jump in. Have a great night! Kristen Hayer MOB Secretary & Olivia's Mom |

Hi MOB, Here are the notes from our membership meeting last Thursday: SSF Scavenger - Barbara, the recycling manager for South San Francisco Scavenger, came to our meeting to provide tips for recycling various household items. Some of her key points, and answers to your questions: Recycling -The plastic bin is primarily for things that are containers (milk jugs, clamshells, shampoo bottles) but not for little things that happen to be plastic (toothbrushes, used up markers, pizza "tables"). -The glass bin is also for containers, but not for things like broken drinking glasses or dishes. -All of the recyclables are hand sorted once they reach SSFS, so rinsing is appreciated. -The recycling trucks are split into plastic and glass, so all the stuff you sorted stays sorted. Please use the correct sides of the recycling bin. This helps to keep the paper on the paper side clean so they can sell it at a higher grade. -Glass does get broken as it goes into the truck, but they are still able to recycle most of it as mixed broken glass. -Waxy paper containers (milk, juice, etc.) are not recyclable and should go in the trash. Composting -Right now there is business composting but no residential composting available. Lipman has been working with SSFS on a compost pilot project - cool! -SSFS is planning to introduce composting as a residential option in July 2013 and will be out presenting that to the community as it is available. -They are working with cutting-edge anaerobic digestion technology for this project, which would not only provide composting services but also provide methane gas to fuel their trucks. -Once this is introduced they will be able to take food-soiled paper, coffee filters, food waste, pizza boxes, etc. Hazardous Waste -Incandescent light bulbs go in the trash, Fluorescent light bulbs can be recycled at Brisbane Hardware. -SSFS offers household hazardous waste drop-off for some things on Saturdays (paint cans, oil from your car). See their website for details. Other Stuff -There is a Reuse Guide that has been published locally. You can get a printed copy of this guide by calling SSFS or go online: www.recycleworks.org to learn where you can recycle odd things like old tennis shoes and toothbrushes -Tipping your garbage man? The garbage men love treats and tips during the holidays, but unless you can catch them when they drive by it is best to call SSFS to ask who they are and how to mail them those cookies. -Interesting fact: America's largest export is our recycled waste. -In 2014 SSFS will be celebrating its 100th year of serving the area! We also discussed: -A potential mural project for Brisbane. On November 4th there will be an idea-gathering tour of the murals in the Mission District at 9am. Contact Lori with questions or if you're interested in going. -A better way to manage the list of MOB members. Bonnie and DeeDee are working on ways to make that more secure and still useful for everyone. I'm closing the MOB Election Survey this Sunday, so if you haven't had a chance to complete that, please do so. There are new activities on the MOB calendar - please check the website for details. There was a lot going on at the meeting, so if I've missed anything please feel free to chime in! Kristen Hayer 425.922.1637 |

So much going on, so little time! Seriously, families, there is a lot going on! September's meeting attendance: Dawn, June, Jessica, Danielle, Vicki, Lori, Kristen (+ assorted children - cute!) Board Survey -- expect to see it in your in-boxes this week! Don't be shy about letting us know if you'd like to play a more active role in this organization. All contributions are welcomed! For instance, we may be hearing more from member, Lori Lui about outdoor outings and hikes. Personally, I can't wait! Teen Center - a few of the MOB board members are actively working with the city in revamping the teen center (paint job, more inviting, better activities....). If anyone wants to participate in helping with the Teen Center, email Jessica Aloft (j.aloft@gmail.com), Elisa Primm (elisaprimm@gmail.com), or DeeDee Porter (deedee@deedeeporter.com) Clothing Swap - Saturday October 13th @ Community Park Gazebo. Same day as the costume swap @ Community Center. Please drop your toys, clothes, gear, etc off beforehand so we have time to sort everything according to size and category. Contact Megan Garner with questions (megantgarner@msn.com) Day in the Park - Saturday, October 6th @ Community Park. This is basically a small community carnival and is tons of fun. We still needs some volunteers -- please contact Angel (angelkane72@hotmail.com) MOB Picnic - will be the same day as the playground build day. Stay tuned for new date. Mural for Brisbane? - Lori Liu brought up the idea of the MOB spearheading or sponsoring a mural project for Brisbane. She brought the example of Exeter, CA's mural efforts. It brings that town revenue and publicity. Different groups in town sponsor various murals. She is going to contact the city about who handled the fire hydrant project to see if that group might be interested in stepping things up with a mural project. If so, it would be great if the MOB could participate in some way. Please contact her if you feel you can help. (loriliu3@yahoo.com) Ways to help our local schools:
Lastly, our next meeting is Thursday, October 11th (second Thursdays) at NaNa's. We may be choosing a venue change that night, so come if you have an opinion! Be sure to check out our calendar at https://sites.google.com/site/mothersofbrisbane/events-and-calendar for a comprehensive list of events. Cheers lovely Brisbane Families!
