Hi MOB,

Here's the scoop from the meeting this evening...

Michelle, Elisa, Lori, Danielle, Megan, Jessica, Jennifer and Kristen were at NaNa's Kitchen, along with guest speaker Cliff Lentz (Mayor).

Cliff spoke to the group about a variety of city services and initiatives including the economic development subcommittee, the Sierra Point development project, the school district survey, and ideas related to the teen center.  Cliff reminded us that all subcommittee meetings are open to the public, and you can find the meeting calendar on the city website (http://www.ci.brisbane.ca.us/ - go to the City Government section and look under "All Meetings").  If you'd like more specifics on any of these topics please feel free to reach out to the board members who attended.

Upcoming Events (see MOB calendar for updates):
11/14 - Playground build day (if you want to bring some food or snacks to the park for the workers it would be appreciated!)
11/15 - Nail Night, 7-9pm (again, snacks and drinks welcome)
11/28 - MOB Bingo Night, Community Center (more info to come, but I am so excited!!!)
12/5 - MOB Hike, Laurelwood Park, San Mateo, 10am-1pm (more info to come)
1/13 - Food Bank Volunteer Event (more info to come)

Other Agenda Items:
  • Monday Baby Playgroup is cancelled going forward
  • Considering planning a regular Wednesday activity.  The hike on 12/5 is the first of these.  This will be formalized over the next month or two.
  • Danielle is looking into having a trainer come and give a workshop for MOB members on core workouts.  Date/time TBD.
  • Teen Center project is moving along.  Next step is a field trip to "Vibe" down in Foster City.  See Jessica if you'd like to get involved.
  • Skate Park project also moving along.  Looking at grant applications.  See Elisa if you'd like to get involved.
  • City Mural project also underway.  Working with Chamber to create a non-profit organization to manage the project funds.  Mural tour was productive.  Considering a community outreach event that would include a muralist and/or documentary about the economic benefits of murals.  See Lori if you'd like to get involved.
  • 2012/2013 board members were all unanimously approved by the recent membership survey.

If you have any questions or would like to add something I've missed, please jump in.  Have a great night!

Hi MOB,

Here are the notes from our membership meeting last Thursday:

SSF Scavenger - Barbara, the recycling manager for South San Francisco Scavenger, came to our meeting to provide tips for recycling various household items.  Some of her key points, and answers to your questions:

Recycling
-The plastic bin is primarily for things that are containers (milk jugs, clamshells, shampoo bottles) but not for little things that happen to be plastic (toothbrushes, used up markers, pizza "tables").
-The glass bin is also for containers, but not for things like broken drinking glasses or dishes.
-All of the recyclables are hand sorted once they reach SSFS, so rinsing is appreciated.
-The recycling trucks are split into plastic and glass, so all the stuff you sorted stays sorted.  Please use the correct sides of the recycling bin.  This helps to keep the paper on the paper side clean so they can sell it at a higher grade.
-Glass does get broken as it goes into the truck, but they are still able to recycle most of it as mixed broken glass.
-Waxy paper containers (milk, juice, etc.) are not recyclable and should go in the trash.

Composting
-Right now there is business composting but no residential composting available.  Lipman has been working with SSFS on a compost pilot project - cool!
-SSFS is planning to introduce composting as a residential option in July 2013 and will be out presenting that to the community as it is available.
-They are working with cutting-edge anaerobic digestion technology for this project, which would not only provide composting services but also provide methane gas to fuel their trucks.
-Once this is introduced they will be able to take food-soiled paper, coffee filters, food waste, pizza boxes, etc.

Hazardous Waste
-Incandescent light bulbs go in the trash, Fluorescent light bulbs can be recycled at Brisbane Hardware.
-SSFS offers household hazardous waste drop-off for some things on Saturdays (paint cans, oil from your car).  See their website for details.

Other Stuff
-There is a Reuse Guide that has been published locally.  You can get a printed copy of this guide by calling SSFS or go online:  www.recycleworks.org to learn where you can recycle odd things like old tennis shoes and toothbrushes
-Tipping your garbage man?  The garbage men love treats and tips during the holidays, but unless you can catch them when they drive by it is best to call SSFS to ask who they are and how to mail them those cookies.
-Interesting fact:  America's largest export is our recycled waste.
-In 2014 SSFS will be celebrating its 100th year of serving the area!

We also discussed:
-A potential mural project for Brisbane.  On November 4th there will be an idea-gathering tour of the murals in the Mission District at 9am.  Contact Lori with questions or if you're interested in going.
-A better way to manage the list of MOB members.  Bonnie and DeeDee are working on ways to make that more secure and still useful for everyone.

I'm closing the MOB Election Survey this Sunday, so if you haven't had a chance to complete that, please do so.

There are new activities on the MOB calendar - please check the website for details.  There was a lot going on at the meeting, so if I've missed anything please feel free to chime in!

So much going on, so little time! Seriously, families, there is a lot going on!

September's meeting attendance:  Dawn, June, Jessica, Danielle, Vicki, Lori, Kristen (+ assorted children - cute!)

Board Survey -- expect to see it in your in-boxes this week! Don't be shy about letting us know if you'd like to play a more active role in this organization. All contributions are welcomed! For instance, we may be hearing more from member, Lori Lui about outdoor outings and hikes. Personally, I can't wait!

Teen Center - a few of the MOB board members are actively working with the city in revamping the teen center (paint job, more inviting, better activities....). If anyone wants to participate in helping with the Teen Center, email Jessica Aloft (j.aloft@gmail.com), Elisa Primm (elisaprimm@gmail.com), or DeeDee Porter (deedee@deedeeporter.com)

Clothing Swap - Saturday October 13th @ Community Park Gazebo. Same day as the costume swap @ Community Center. Please drop your toys, clothes, gear, etc off beforehand so we have time to sort everything according to size and category. Contact Megan Garner with questions (megantgarner@msn.com)

Day in the Park - Saturday, October 6th @ Community Park. This is basically a small community carnival and is tons of fun. We still needs some volunteers -- please contact Angel (angelkane72@hotmail.com)

MOB Picnic
- will be the same day as the playground build day. Stay tuned for new date.

Mural for Brisbane? -  Lori Liu brought up the idea of the MOB spearheading or sponsoring a mural project for Brisbane.  She brought the example of Exeter, CA's mural efforts.  It brings that town revenue and publicity.  Different groups in town sponsor various murals.  She is going to contact the city about who handled the fire hydrant project to see if that group might be interested in stepping things up with a mural project.  If so, it would be great if the MOB could participate in some way. Please contact her if you feel you can help. (loriliu3@yahoo.com)

Ways to help our local schools:
  • Bring used print cartridges, cell phones and scotch tape dispensers to the BES front office. They receive money for these donations AND you feel good about not adding to the landfill.
  • Download the http://www.goodsearch.com toolbar so that every time you end up at website that offers a donation to BES or Lipman, you can activate the donation.
  • Get a Target credit card, select BES or Lipman as your school of choice and use it every time you shop at Target.
  • http://www.escrip.com/ -- The most effortless way to give free money to schools ever. All you do is sign up and put in all credit cards that you use. If you happen to shop or eat at a participating store/eatery, then a percentage of your purchase automatically goes to the school you signed up with. Silverspot, BES, and Lipman all participate.
  • Save Your "Fresh & Easy" Receipts and drop to Silverspot.  The school will get $1 for every $20 spent. There is a Fresh and Easy on Silver Avenue in SF (Excelsior) and 3rd Street (Bayview). Additionally, if we make $500 or more, we get a $50 bonus. We will also be signed up for a Family Shopping Night during which we get 5% t that night's total sales (with receipts). We could stand to make as much as $5,000 with this program without a single family shelling out a dime. Win-win, right? Now start collecting those receipts!
  • Collect Box Tops and drop them off to BES.
  • Save your recyclable items and drop them off at the hardware store. Did you know that Brisbane Elementary School District made $10,000 last year?! They think they could have doubled it if they had more participation and more volunteers to help sort. Email Dan and Nancy Sorentino if you think you can help dsorrentino@earthlink.net.

Lastly, our next meeting is Thursday, October 11th (second Thursdays) at NaNa's. We may be choosing a venue change that night, so come if you have an opinion! Be sure to check out our calendar at https://sites.google.com/site/mothersofbrisbane/events-and-calendar for a comprehensive list of events.

Cheers lovely Brisbane Families!

Attending: Megan Garner, Michelle Woodruff, DeeDee Porter, Ana Maria Hernandez, Elisa Primm

Thursday night was fun to say the least. I keep giggling thinking about our conversations. Amazingly we got some things sorted out as well.

UPCOMING

  • Possibly soon! -- A 6-week (I think) course on baby signing. Megan is going to find out more and if the MOB has enough funds to cover this amazing teacher, then all will be able to attend.
  • August 25 or 26 -- Community build day! Come join the community to rebuild the Community Park Playground!
  • Sunday, Sept 9th -- MOB Family Picnic. This year we will try out this popular and fun event at BES. Family picnic in the park. We will have potluck and fun games for the kids like three-legged-races and egg walks. Stay tuned for time.
  • Sunday, Sept 30th -- Woman's and kids clothing and gear swap – Start saving your items. Everything will sell for $1 per item as a donation to the MOB and a way to get some really inexpensive new stuff. This will likely be held in the Community Park Gazebo 1-4pm. Hopefully we'll have MOB gear from http://www.cafepress.com/mobrisbane for sale that day too. We hope to have non-profit donation slips for your taxes as well.
  • October -- Day in the Park. Cotton candy. Fun. Need I say more? We are still looking for a volunteer to coordinate this MOB fundraiser....super important so that we have money for speakers, Easter egg hunts, and other fun events. Volunteers speak up!

IN DISCUSSION

  • A Wednesday night soon! - Bingo night at the Community Center
  • Anti-bullying talk – Kids Power
  • Invite South San Francisco Scavenger to our membership meeting soon. What is recycle-able anyway?
  • Discussing the possibility of organizing a day to paint the teen center…maybe getting vending machines in there? Café tables in front? Have kids paint the garage squares? Stay tuned!

ONGOING

  • Every Friday, 10am-12pm -- Playgym continues -- Many thanks to Michelle Woodruff!!
  • Second Thursday of the month -- Membership gathering. Come meet other local moms at Bamboo Garden from 7-8:30. Come early, come late, just come!
  • Continue to support new moms through meals and MOB gift
  • Outreach to families with older kids and possible collaboration with BEST/PTO on events
  • Continue or expand charitable work. Because of the 49ers/Giants game, our last planned Food Bank outing was actually cancelled. Disappointing, but we will try to secure a new date for this very soon. Please let us know of other volunteering ideas where the little ones can also participate.

The survey for board and subcommittee meetings will distribute next month. We are a very lax bunch just looking to do great things for our kids, if you considered this for even a moment, call/email me or anyone else on the board and let us know which of the positions below we should put your name next to on the election survey….new moms, single moms, experienced moms, near-Brisbane-but-live-somewhere-else-moms, working moms, soon-to-be moms….All eligible!!!

Hope to see you soon!

Caregivers of Brisbane,

Happy New Year! (I think according to Seinfeld, I can still say that as long as it's January.....or was it the other way around?)

Our first membership meeting of the year was FUN! We didn't get a whole lot planned, but we threw around a ton of ideas...and laughed and talked and chatted....and got very excited about the year ahead...and chatted and talked and laughed.

Attending: um….my two kids were in tow, so I was a little distracted…let me do my best…Jessica A, DeeDee, Ana Maria, Kristen, Vicki, Jennifer B, Elisa…and sooo sorry if I forgot someone!

So as a heads up, let me share with you what we have to look forward to in 2012 (in no particular order):

  • Tuesday, Jan 31st from 6:30pm to 8:00pm -- There will be a Kindergarten Readiness Presentation by BES and Panorama Elementary School Principal Chad Carvey.  Get the scoop (and bring your questions) from a current elementary school principal!  Mr. Carvey will be discussing kinder readiness, public/private school philosophy, gifted/advanced kids, learning needs, kindergarten curriculum, tips and more. Location: Silverspot Pre-School; 4 Solano Rd, Brisbane. Contact Angel with questions angelkane72@hotmail.com.
  • April -- Improve outdoor space behind library and community center. An organization called Rebuilding Together chose us to, well, REBUILD! The Mothers of Brisbane will assist with the gardening portion of the renovation and we need all the hands we can get. I believe this will be the last Saturday in April, so mark that on your calendar as a day to get blissfully dirty.
  • July -- We will try to harness energy this year to create a family friendly 4th of July event right here in town. Let us know if you are interested in helping.
  • April -- Egg hunt the Saturday before Easter at the tot lot geared for under 5's. We always band together a group to make this really fun event happen. Let us know if you'd like to make it happen.
  • October -- Day in the Park. Cotton candy. Fun. Need I say more?
  • Sept/Oct -- Family picnic in the park. Always fun and Autumn seems to offer more predictable weather. Stay tuned.

ONGOING

  • Every Friday, 10am-12pm -- Playgym continues
  • Mom's night out. Ana Maria is churning the wheels on our next one. Email her to let her know when you could attend in February and what you would be interested in doing. ana_maria_h@hotmail.com
  • Second Thursday of the month -- Membership gathering. Come meet other local moms at Bamboo Garden from 7-8:30. Come early, come late, just come!
  • Renovate community park playground. This is still in the works and VERY exciting. Stay tuned for opportunities to participate and lend a hand.

I'm probably forgetting something….but we’ll be in touch. I will leave you with one more thought….it would be lovely to add an Education Coordinator or two to the MOB team. We are a very lax bunch just looking to do great things for our kids, if you considered this for even a moment, call/email me or anyone else on the board or just come to a membership gathering (second Thursdays)….new moms, single moms, experienced moms, near-Brisbane-but-live-somewhere-else-moms, working moms, soon-to-be moms….All eligible!!!
