As a teacher it is important to understand that most lessons are not going to run exactly as planned and that actually, that is often a sign of a successful class. Other times, a student may bring up a connection to a novel that I had not foreseen, and it is valuable to divert briefly from the plan to explore that connection. I think flexibility is definitely one of my strong suits, as I am constantly learning from my students and adapting as necessary.
