Knudsen
KNUDSEN/ Knutsen/ Knudtsen
Emigrated from Undeberg, Kviteseid, Telemark Norway to Brisbane, Queensland, Australia in 1871 on the Lammershagen
Asmund
1826
Asmund Knutsen was born in 1826 to Knut Halvorson Kiland from the farm Rui 2a.
His name is given as Asmund Knutson Rui/Songedalstveiten 3h - the Rui being the farm he was born on and Songedalstveiten 3h being the farm he lived on.
Knut was married to Gunhild Gjermundsdatter Ovretveit 1f - they were husfolk on Rui -
Asmund
had eight brothers and one sister.
He was the second youngest in the family, although not all lived to adulthood.
By the time Asmund left Telemark in 1872, four of his brothers had died.
Asmund's father, Knut Halvorsen died in 1869, just a few years before Asmund left for Australia.
1850
Asmund marries Signe Olavsdatter Amlijordet H2e from Skafsa - Signe and Asmund are both born in 1826, so both are aged 24 when they marry.
Their first child Eivind Asmundsen is born in 1850 -
their second son Olav Asmundsen is born in 1853 -
Their third son Knut Asmundsen is born in 1855 , followed by a daughter, Birgit Asmundsdatter in 1858.
Their last child, Gunhild Asmundsdatter is born in 1862, but only lives until 1863 when she dies. Sadly Signe, her mother, dies in the same year, leaving Asmund with four small children .
UNDEBERG
Undeberg at Songelstveiten was known as a place from approximately 1817.
Not long after that came Tarald Gunnovson and his wife, Ase Olavsdatter, here from Mo.
Tarald died as a cottar in 1822.
Widow and children was living, but in 1826 Ase married her, left and he came to Renneberg.
Recent people at the place/subfarm to find until Asmund Knutson with his wife Signe Olavsdatter were husfolk in 1853.
1863
Signe died in 1863, and Asmund married and left with Guro Johannesdatter Plassen.
Guro died the same year in childbirth, so Asmund married for the third time with Sigrid Palsdatter.
1865
In 1865, Osmund Knudtsen ( Asmund) is aged 38 and is living on the farm Undeberg with his 3 young sons -
Eivind Osmundsen , born in 1851 in Moland is aged 14 years.
Ole Osmundsen, was born in 1854 in Moland and is aged 11 years.
and Knudt Osmundsen, born in 1856 in Moland is aged 9 years.
1868
In 1868, Asmund remarries Guro Johannesdatter Plassen on 15 March 1868 at Fyresdal Kirke ( or Church) - Guro was born in 1835 and is 33 when they marry - Asmund is 42.
Guro's father is Johannes Larsen.
Sadly she dies in childbirth in the same year, together with their son Johannes Asmundsen.
in 1868, Gunhild, Asmund's mother also dies, so once again, Asmund is left with four children to care for.
1869
In 1869, Asmund's father Knut Halvorsen died, just a year after his mother.
1870
Fyresdal
I
n 1870, Asmund remarries for the third time - this time to Sigrid Palsdatter ( or Paulsdatter) Jordal from Rapestead. Sigrid was born in 1842, so is much younger than Asmund - she is just 28 years old and Asmund is 43. Again they are married in the Fyresdal Kirke -
Sigrid's father is Poul Aasmundsen...
They are married on 19 November 1870 and registered in the Fyrsedal Kirke once again.
1871
Asmund's and Sigri's first child, a son is born in 1871 - and named Anund Asmundsen...
1872
Their second son, Kittel is born in 1872, probably 31 May 1872 -
So by the time Asmund and his family decided to leave for Australia, he had lost two wives, a daughter from his first marriage, a son from his second, 2 brothers and both parents.
When they arrived in Australia, he lost another young son just two years after they arrived here, and then another daughter, Louie, would die aged just 14 in 1897.
Variations in name found on records:
Asmund Undeberg (1873)
Hunsmand Asmund (1874)
Asmund Knudsen (1880)
Osmund Knudsen (1882)
1872 -
Asmund and Sigri and their two young children decide to emigrate to Queensland...
Asmund leaves his other sons and daughter here in Norway presumably.... Eivind, the eldest son is 22, Olav is 19, and Knut is 17 and Birgit is 14.
VOYAGE TO AUSTRALIA
Lammershagen
Asmund, Sigried, Asmund and Kittell arrived on the "Lammershagen" on the 8th January 1873.
They travelled under the name of Undeberg, which was the name of the farm they had lived on in Kviteseid, Telemark, Norway.
Because of the number of similar names generated by the patronymic naming system, it was usual for people to add the name of their farm or some other qualifier to distinguish one person from another.
Also in the 1870's the patronymic naming system was being slowly replaced by the use of surnames which remained constant - so the early records in Queensland show many variations of the names as the years went by.
They appear on the shipping list ( Folder 0115/SHP / SCGS Library) as free passengers.
Asmund was aged 46 years, his third wife Sigrid was aged 30, their son Asmund was one and a half and the baby son Kittell, was just 6 months old.
Asmund, the young child, later appears in Australian records as Edmund and is known to the family as Ned Knudsen.
Kittell, or Kittel, or sometimes Kitfel, died in Queensland aged about 5 years.
(Note in Knudsen family bible has Chattel Christian, born 23/5 and died 2/1 - possibly Kittell, but not checked as yet).
THE VOYAGE -
When the Lammershagen arrived in Moreton Bay it was discovered there was typhoid on board - the ship was quarantined -
NAMES OF THE CHILDREN
The Norwegian naming custom follows a pattern which is used by some families...
Eldest son is named after the Paternal grandfather... Edmund should be Ansmund or Anund
Second son after the maternal grandfather..... Kittel Asmundsen
Eldest daughter after the paternal grandmother.....
Second daughter after the maternal grandmother...
However if there is a deceased spouse, the name of the spouse is used first...
in this case
Eldest son is Asmund or Anund, shortened in Australia to Edward or Ned
Second son is Kittel Asmundson..... ( Kittel is apparently a Telemark name)
Paul - probably after his maternal Grandfather... Sigri's father was Pal or Poul Asmundsen b. 1787
Alfred Christiansen..... Sigri's grandfather was Aasmund Kristiansen b. 1744
Signa - after Signa Olsen? first wife of Asmund Knutsen
Ellen -
Louisa Sarah - Sarah after mother...?
