Author, Woo, Wow, and Win and former Editor-in-Chief of Harvard Business Review

Tom was the Executive Director of the National Center for the Middle Market, at The Ohio State University. He came to the NCMM from international consulting firm Booz & Company (now called Strategy&), where he was Chief Marketing and Knowledge Officer.


He was for six years the Editor-in-Chief of Harvard Business Review and earlier served as a member of the Board of Editors of Fortune.


He is the author of two important KM books, Intellectual Capital: The New Wealth of Organizations and The Wealth of Knowledge: Intellectual Capital and the Twenty-first Century Organization. He has published articles in Harvard Business Review, strategy + business, Fortune Inc., Financial Times, and more.


Tom is a summa cum laude graduate of Harvard College and holds an honorary doctorate from Bayes Business School, City University London.

Afternoon Keynote

President and CEO, Enterprise Knowledge, LLC 

Zach has over 20 years of experience leading programs in the knowledge and information management space. He has worked with more than 200 public and private organizations to successfully strategize, design, and implement information management systems, including knowledge bases, intranets, content management, document management, taxonomy management, and websites (eCommerce and informational). Zach has developed his own taxonomy design methodology, has authored a series of courses on knowledge management, and is a frequent speaker and trainer on information governance, web strategy, and taxonomy design. His experience includes projects for a broad spectrum of clients, ranging from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Department of Defense (DoD), and Department of Energy (DOE). He also has extensive experience in the private sector and internationally with institutions including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Nike, Marriott, Scottish Qualifications Authority, and UK Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

Zach has served on the board of the Washington DC Knowledge Management Institute and as the Chairman of the Institute for International Research (IIR) Enterprise Web, Portals, and Collaborative Technologies conference. He presently serves as the Chairman of the annual KM Showcase and as faculty for the Knowledge Management Institute, providing training and consulting on taxonomy design and development. Under his leadership, EK has consistently been recognized as a great place to work, most recently by Washington Business Journal, Inc. Magazine, and the Washingtonian.

Linda Lavelle is a Knowledge Management leader who believes that the best knowledge in an organization can be identified, personalized, and shared to drive successful business outcomes.   

Linda had a 32-year career at Johnson & Johnson where she combined a people and process focus with her project management and innovation experience to create tailored knowledge management solutions. Since leaving Johnson & Johnson in 2022, Linda has followed her passion for Knowledge Management and started her own consulting firm, Knowledge Dynamics, to help organizations harness their greatest asset – their knowledge.

 

During her tenure as Director of Knowledge Management and Innovation at Johnson & Johnson, Linda developed the Supply Chain Knowledge Network accessed by over 20K employees annually, creating curated, trusted source of Supply Chain knowledge.  She enabled over $50MM in savings by developing and providing oversight of 26 Knowledge Centers focused on key strategic topics.   Linda was also instrumental in driving a  culture of innovation by leading an innovation collaboration platform that hosted 200 challenges in 81 countries, generated 20K ideas and realized $30MM in predicted savings.

Patricia L. Eng, P.E. is a certified ISO 30401 Auditor for Knowledge management systems and Principal at KMHR Systems Auditors. During her 30-year career with the U.S. government, she wrote domestic and international regulations and created and managed the KM program at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission saving them almost 60 million dollars in operational costs.

 She has co-authored two books on KM, trains and certifies ISO 30401 auditors, teaches an Intro to ISO 30401 course, and certifies organizations to the ISO KM standard. She serves on the Advisory Board for the Master of Science in KM Program at Kent State University where she teaches the Leadership and Professional Development Course. Dr. Cynthia “Cindy” J. Young is the founder/CEO of CJ Young Consulting, LLC, a knowledge management consulting firm, as well as the Theater Mission Planning Center  Curriculum Development and Training Lead with Leidos in Virginia Beach, VA. In 2012, she retired as a Surface Warfare Officer after 23 years in the U.S. Navy, which is where her love for knowledge management began.

 

She holds professional certifications as a Project Management Professional, a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, and as an ASQ-Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence.

 

In September 2020, she gave a TEDx Talk called “A Knowledge Mindset: What You Know Comes from Where You Sit" which provides actions organizations can take to improve trust and retention using knowledge management practices and in February 2023, her book, The Knowledge Management Memory Jogger®, was published by Goal/QPC.

Jim Clarke has worked for the past nine years at The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company as a Knowledge Management Specialist where he has developed the Knowledge Sweep methodology, revamped the Rapid Learning Cycle methodology, engaged in vendor management, and taught quarterly KM training classes. As a Goodyear representative, Clarke has delivered prior presentations and workshops at KMWorld Conferences and The Knowledge Leaders Council Meetings. His current project efforts include the establishment of a statewide corporate R&D consortium to leverage cooperative bargaining for sci-tech literature database subscriptions. Prior to working at Goodyear, Clarke served as the Engineering Librarian at Miami University, and he has also worked for other manufacturing companies such as DaimlerChrysler and Navistar International Corporation. Clarke earned a Master of Information Science from the University of Michigan School of Information, a Master of Arts in American history from the University of Houston, and a Bachelor of Arts in communications and history from Hiram College.

Dr. Rachel Teague is a rising KM transfer and retention expert, consultant, speaker, writer, master trainer & facilitator, collaborator, & education professional. Throughout her life she has lived through change, growth, transition, & restructure. She has leveraged these experiences, both positive and negative, to inform her outlook and understanding of how organizations work and thrive.  As a result of Dr. Teague’s case study, How an Effective Knowledge Management Program Supports Critical Tacit Knowledge Retention Within a Higher Education Institution: A Qualitative Intrinsic Case Study, Dr. Teague developed tools educators can add to their ‘experiential tool belts’ as they navigate new challenges facing education as well as impacts of retirement, staffing changes, and budget cuts. As the world of education is ever evolving, the need to shift with these changes is necessary in order to effectively adapt and provide the best opportunities possible for the learning ecosystem.

Stan Garfield is a knowledge management author, speaker, and community leader based in Northville, Michigan. He has worked in the field of knowledge management for over 25 years.

Stan spent 8 years at Deloitte leading communities and enterprise social networking. Prior to that, he spent 25 years at HP, Compaq, and Digital Equipment Corporation. Stan launched Digital's first knowledge management program in 1996, helped develop the corporate KM strategy for Compaq, and led the Worldwide Consulting & Integration Knowledge Management Program for HP. He also worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers, St. Louis University School of Medicine, and Washington University School of Medicine.

Stan holds a BS in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from Washington University in St. Louis. He leads the SIKM Leaders Community with over 1,100 members globally, and is invited to present at numerous conferences, including KMWorld and the APQC KM Conference. Stan has published over 800 articles on leadership, innovation, knowledge management, communities of practice, enterprise social networks, and social media. He is the author of the Profiles in Knowledge series featuring knowledge management thought leaders.

Rajesh Singh Dhillon started his KM journey with the Singapore Navy, retiring after 23 years as a naval commander. In Singapore he is an Associate Faculty at Nanyang Technological University and Singapore University of Social Science, where he teaches KM Strategy and Information Management at the Masters and Bachelors level, respectively.

 

Rajesh is also the Knowledge Architect at Acies Innovations Singapore, where he provides consulting services in the areas of leadership development, knowledge and performance management, employee engagement, and organizational learning.

 

As the President of Knowledge Management Society Singapore and one of the founding members of Knowledge Management Global Network, Rajesh is a well known figure in the professional KM community in Singapore and Asia.

 

His contribution to KM, is as a KM-ISO 30401 consultant and he is the lead evaluator of the Knowledge ready organisation (KRO) and part of the international judging panel for the MIKE awards.

Daniel Ranta has 25+ years of experience in KM strategy, collaboration, content management, portal design, social networking and measuring business results. He has worked as a KM Leader for large, global companies and as a consulting practice leader in KM. His experiences across industries in understanding corporate challenges/cultures and accelerating the movement from strategy to action are well known and often written about in the KM space. He is currently a KM advisor/consultant for various companies.

Maggie Starkey is an accomplished Knowledge Management Specialist with 10+ years of distinguished performance in multiple roles in the manufacturing industry. She is an innovator who seeks out opportunities for improvements and implements new ideas to make a positive difference for her colleagues at Kraton Corporation.

 In 2020, she found her passion for knowledge management after seeing the vast amount of knowledge being lost at Kraton and became the key player in the creation and implementation of the Knowledge Management program. She holds an associate degree in business management and a BS in Public Relations and Marketing. She will also complete her MS in Knowledge Management in December of 2023. Among her vast knowledge from experience and higher education, she regularly attends conferences and trainings to continually be a great leader, expert in knowledge management and other key areas that tie directly to KM. She is a change agent for Kraton, continually developing and implementing new tools and mechanisms to improve work processes and share knowledge across the R&D organization she represents at Kraton. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling with her boyfriend, playing with her dog, Bella, and cooking.

Jessica DeMay and Heather Irvin Hauser are newer to the KM field, having each graduated with their Masters within the last few years. They are passionate about the topic and eagerly soak up information and insights, delighted to share their knowledge and networks while learning from others.

The two met while working the Llama Train on Mount LeConte, Smoky Mountains, supplying hikers with food and laundry. It is on this cliffside, wrangling llamas packed full of supplies, where they dreamed up their KM podcast and wrote numerous award-winning books. To date, they have shared 17,634 text messages, none of which are published.

Ah, dreams… It is true they met while completing their MKM at Kent State University and have built a formidable friendship and work relationship. Both earned an undergrad in Education, bringing a special something to the KM discussion. They advocate for and develop successful and vibrant Knowledge Management practices for organizations and aspire to connect all KMers in dynamic and meaningful ways.

Jessica has worked with multiple Fortune 500 companies to install better KM practices. Heather is currently on the job market. Research and teaching are high on their list of 'Things To Do' as Soon as Possible.

Dr. Anthony j. Rhem is a recognized thought leader, author and consultant in Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge Management, Big Data, Information Architecture, and Innovation. Since 1990 has served as CEO/Principal Consultant of A.J. Rhem & Associates, a privately held system integration consulting, training & research firm specializing in Knowledge Management (KM) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) with offices in Chicago, Il and Charlotte NC.

 

Anthony consults with venture capitalist and investment firms specifically as it pertains to emerging technology innovations, best practices, and trends in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), and Knowledge Management (KM). John Antill is currently a contractor assisting with KM. With over 15 years of progressively responsible knowledge management experience in complex technical roles – both military and civilian – requiring exceptional project coordination, problem-solving, and management skills, John has established a track record of success by leveraging a collaborative leadership style to accomplish all short- and long-range objectives. An engaging and articulate communicator, he is able to clearly convey complex technical information and propose novel solutions to build consensus with key project stakeholders, including high-value clients and executive leadership. Furthermore, his consistent focus on remaining at the forefront of rapidly evolving technology allows him to drive enterprise-wide innovation and maintain a competitive advantage. John is on the Board of Veterans IN Farming, which seeks to help Veterans Farmers in Indiana. John Holds a Master of Science in Knowledge Management from Kent State University and a Master of Certified Knowledge Management from the KM Institute.


Ari Kramer is Knowledge Management Officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the nation's largest private foundation solely to health. In this role, Ari leads RWJF’s knowledge management function and activities and resources that enable efficient, effective and equitable use of knowledge in support of RWJF’s vision and objectives. He also manages grant funding to organizations that provide essential infrastructure for knowledge sharing across the philanthropic sector, and works with fellow practitioners to advance KM in the field.

 

In previous positions at RWJF, Ari served as a manager on the Foundation's digital communications team and provided strategic communications support for initiatives focusing on public and community health, with a emphasis on digital content and outreach. Prior to joining the Foundation in 2009, Ari served as manager of communications and member services for the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers worked for several years a reporter and freelance writer. He holds an MS in Journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a BS in International Affairs and BA in Russian from Florida State University.

Bill Kaplan, a KM Practitioner, published author, and KM Coach, is the Founder of Working KnowledgeCSP, an independent, internationally recognized knowledge management consulting company. 

 

After a 25-year USAF career, Bill served as the Chief Knowledge Officer and Knowledge Management Practice Manager at Acquisition Solutions, Inc. (ASI), a public sector focused management consulting company. Under Bill's knowledge leadership, ASI earned Top 20 North American Most Admired Knowledge Enterprise (MAKE) recognition from Teleos in 2007, 2008, and 2009.  Prior to that, he was the Deputy Global KM Practice Manager at SAIC. CIO Review recognized Working KnowledgeCSP as one of the “10 Most Promising KM Solution Providers of 2018 and 2020.”

 

Bill holds a BS in Business and Economics from Lehigh University, an MBA from The Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and a Professional Degree in Engineering Management with a concentration in Knowledge Management from The George Washington University.  He previously taught KM as an adjunct professor in knowledge management at the University of Maryland, Global Campus.

Darrin Brogan has been building knowledge sharing cultures within the professional services industry for 25 years. He is currently the Associate VP, Knowledge Management for The Chartis Group, a healthcare consulting firm based in Chicago. 

Darrin has led the Chartis KM team for the past seven years, building a KM infrastructure that has helped the company grow from just over 100 employees in 2016 to nearly 900 in 2023. Darrin’s efforts have enabled the firm to adopt an enterprise-wide commitment to knowledge sharing, methodology development, change management and innovation.

Prior to Chartis, Darrin held various KM-related positions with Ernst & Young LLC. Darrin specializes in Communities of Practice, Enterprise Social, Content Management/Taxonomy, Knowledge Transfer and Enterprise Architecture.


Valdis is a data scientist who specializes in social, relational, data analysis and visualization to help clients understand our organizations and communities in a world of complex/entangled knowledge flows, human interactions, exchanges, and influence.


Krebs is a network scientist, who uses data mining, social network analysis, pattern discovery and artificial intelligence (AI) to assist a worldwide client base. He developed the popular InFlow software and many other unique algorithms for discovering patterns in human networks.


Before starting his own business, Valdis held various HR management positions at The Walt Disney Company, TRW Space & Defense, Ford Motor Company, and Toyota USA. Valdis works from his office in Cleveland, Ohio with a network of colleagues and collaborators around the world.


Valdis has been cited thousands of times in academic publications, patent applications and court documents on network analysis, network visualization, organizational networks, community networks and covert/criminal networks. His work also appears in dozens of business books. 


Linda Hummel is the Strategy Knowledge Manager for EY-Parthenon. She has 20 years of professional Knowledge Management (KM) experience in Fortune 500 firms across the consulting, financial, energy, and technology industries, as well as running her own boutique KM consulting firm.  She established and institutionalized, from the ground up, KM programs at NCR Professional Services, Teradata, GE Energy, and 5/3 Bank, and deepened her expertise at world-class KM organizations at Accenture and EY.

She currently supports practitioners and partners in their business development efforts by providing key knowledge of past projects to increase win rates and by finding reusable materials to increase margins. She implemented AI technology to improve search and findability of information for faster onboarding of new hires and better efficiency for all associates. Linda pioneered a process for measuring business value, which was recognized in a leading industry journal as best practice approach for quantifying KM return on investment. She has a BS in Meteorology with a Math minor, an MS in Computer Science, and a certificate of completion (graduate level) in Management.

In summary, Linda has deep expertise in KM and broad experience across multiple industries, with versatile skills ranging from technical (AI, RPA, SharePoint, MS365) to business related (transformational leadership, teaming, communications, problem solving, and adaptability).
