Range is the total distance traveled by an aircraft on a tank of fuel.
Endurance is the total time in air for a tank of fuel.
For cruising level flight these are cruise range (X) and cruise endurance (E) . An important parameter is the specific fuel consumption (c). Range and Endurance calculation follow similar steps and hence are discussed together. The final form off the relational are called as the Brequet Formulas
Range Calculations
The following parameters effect the range
1. Lower c increase in range
2. Higher altitude increases range
3. Larger fuel capacity increases range
4. Higher sqrt(CL)/CD Higher range
Endurance Calculations:
The following parameters effect the endurance
1. Lower c larger endurance
2. Higher aerodynamic efficiency (CL/CD) higher range
3. Larger fuel capacity greater range
