Basic Crash Investigation for the Patrol Officer

Summary

This class is intended for the officer who is interested in exploring career in crash investigation. The course will introduce students to topics such as tire examination, headlamp examination, roadway evidence analysis, the psychology of driving, how people react in the moments before a crash and the factors which effect these reactions.

The physics of the crash and vehicle dynamics will be introduced briefly. At the end of the class the student will have a better understanding of causative factors and how to begin a more in depth investigation.

This will serve as a good preparatory class for the student who plans to take more advanced crash investigation classes in the future.

Topics Include:

  • Discussion of operators reaction time

  • Physical evidence from the roadway

  • Physical evidence from the vehicle

  • Overview of crash dynamics

This course is not a substitute for the Level I (At Scene) Crash Investigation Course and does not qualify as a prerequisite for the Level II (Advanced) Crash Investigation School.

This training is presented on an as needed basis.


Attire, Costs and Other Requirements

Students will need to bring note taking materials and a scientific calculator.

Dress is professional casual.
