The similarity percentages breakdown (SIMPER) procedure (Clarke, 1993) attempts to assess the average percent contribution of individual variables to the dissimilarity between objects in a Bray-Curtis dissimilarity matrix. This allows users to identify variables that are likely to be the major contributors to any difference between groups detected by methods such as ANOSIM.
