Virtual Counseling or telehealth means the provision of mental health services when the provider and client are at different locations and the services are being provided over electronic media, usually the internet.
Virtual counseling has both risks and benefits.
Some risks:
- technical failures could interrupt a session
- the possibility of breaches of confidentiality by unauthorized persons
- limited ability to respond to emergencies
Some benefits:
- flexibility in scheduling appointments
- convenience
- progress with goals that otherwise may not be achieved due to the virtual format
I use a secure, HIPAA-compliant internet platform called doxy.me. It does not require downloading software. Connection for a session is established by using my unique web address.
