What is an RSU?
Do you know what an RSU is? These small rental studio apartments could be coming to your neighborhood if a zoning amendment by the County is approved. In the short time that the County's proposed change to the zoning ordinance has been made public, citizens and community groups have been scrambling to learn more and to express their concerns to the Board of Supervisors and Office of Planning and Zoning. Their main concern is that the proposed amendment could allow the conversion of Single Family Dwellings into multiple family RSUs -- rental efficiency apartments of 500 sq. ft or less in most residential, commercial, industrial and planned districts. While many residents recognize the need for affordable housing, they believe strongly that the current amendment would threaten the character and stability of their established single family neighborhoods.

Organizations like the Mason District Council and Fairfax Federation of Citizens Associations have strong concerns about the proposed amendment in its current form and have passed resolutions to improve the proposal with suggestions to help protect and preserve single family neighborhoods and guide more logical placement of RSU developments.
Please see resolutions:

Mason District Council has also prepared a petition opposing the currently drafted amendment which anyone in Fairfax County may sign.

The MDC will also hold a meeting on the topic on November 14th at 7:30 at the Mason District Governmental Center. The author of the proposed amendment will be there.
