Mid Atlantic Brown Swiss Invitational Big Success Youth Show Dedicated to the Memory of Maddie Rose Johnson

Frederick, MD.— The Mid Atlantic Brown Swiss Invitational was held June 24th in Frederick, MD. This year’s Youth Show was dedicated to the Memory of Maddie Rose Johnson of Cochranton, PA.  who was lost in a car accident at the end of 2022.  The Showmanship contest and awards as well as the Blue T-shirts that all the youth wore during the show were graciously sponsored by the Maddie Johnson Memorial Fund & The Deeter Family.  A special Thank You to Michelle Morian for designing the back of these shirts. 


Maddie and her family have been exhibiting at this show for several years and are great supporters of the show and the breed.  “This was one of Maddie’s favorite shows to exhibit at and she especially loved the showmanship contest,” said Maddie’s mother, Holly Deeter Johnson.  The family wants to give back to shows and agricultural events that Maddie loved being involved in and want to express their appreciation to all the people and groups that have supported them through this difficult time.  

 

Starting the day were the Showmanship classes, judged by Kayla Umbel Barton of Clear Spring, MD. 37 talented youth competed in some very close placing classes. Coming out on top were:

Novice:   Avery Kaufman, PA

Junior:  Brandon Deeter, PA

Intermediate: Makenna Mase, PA 

Senior:  Katelyn Taylor, PA

The Overall Showman went to Katelyn Taylor & Reserve went to MaKenna Mase.

 

Peter Vail, NY was the owner and exhibitor for the Trifecta of Champions at this show!  Vail was also Premier Exhibitor of the show. The Grand Champion was the  5-year-old, A-Joy T Snowfall, the Reserve Grand Champion was the Sr. 3-year-old,  Hills Valley Carter Flirty, and the Honorable Mention was the 4-year old- Buschs Famous Jenna. Judge Jenny Thomas, Lewisburg, OH. commented on the outstanding mammary systems, the beautiful udders on such stylish, dairy and overall balance of these champion cows representing the breed!  

 

Junior Champion honors went to the Fall Yearling- Kruses ACC C Just Dance, exhibited by Glamourview-Iager & Walton, Walkersville, MD.  Reserve JR. Champion was the Winter Yearling- Northkill Creek Ghost Town, exhibited by Hannah Balthaser, Bernville, PA.  and Honorable Mention was the Summer Yearling- Radical R WishUpon A Star, exhibited by Lindsey Rucks Pettit, Okeechobee, FL. 

 

Premier Breeder of the show was  A-Joy Swiss (The Kuhlman & Evans Families)

 

“The quality of this show ran very deep throughout the heifer classes, and continued into the cow classes, “said Judge Thomas.  “They call this “The Little All American” Show for a good reason when you have had the honor to see and judge such a high quality show. Many of these animals should do well at the next level shows in the Fall” said Thomas.  “I want to thank the Exhibitors for bringing such outstanding animals to the show today” she concluded.

 

Topping the Cash awards for the Youth show was a $500 cash award to the Jr. Champion and also a $500 cash award to the Grand Champion in Memory of Maddie Johnson. Both were sponsored by Round Hill Acres, Cindy Warner, Frederick, MD.   Reserve Grand received a $300 cash award sponsored by Udder Comfort c/o Sherry Bunting East Earl, PA and the Best Bred & Owned animal of the Youth show also received a $250 Cash award, sponsored by Jeff McKissick, Dochaven Genetics, New Castle, PA

 

The Youth Division Grand Champion was the Aged Cow- Mase’s Manor Grandslam Love, owned by Makenna Mase, Cochranton, PA. Reserve honors went to the Sr. 2-year-old- Thunder Ridge Dyn Princess, Ben Zeller, Richland, PA. Honorable Mention was the 2ndSr. 2-year-old- Kourlyn MI TE Star, Katelyn Bell, Frederick, MD.

 

And the Jr. Champion Honors in the Youth show were: Jr. Champion- Winter Yearling- Northkill Creek Ghost Town, Hannah Balthaser, Bernville, PA. Reserve was the Fall Calf, Blessing Garbro F Whitney, Katelyn Taylor, Allenwood, PA. Honorable Mention went to the Winter Calf- Breeze Ridge SallySue, Zoe Lasley, Woodsboro, MD.   

 

There were seven states represented at the show this year with a total of 133 animals going through the ring, consisting of 92 heifers and 41 cows.

In addition to class & champion prizes, all champions in both Open & Youth received some very nice Cash awards.

Frederick, Maryland: Mid Atlantic Brown Swiss Invitational Show was held

The Mid-Atlantic Brown Swiss Invitational Show was held Saturday June 25th in Frederick, Maryland. This outstanding regional show had a record high number 150 head of Brown Swiss from 9 different states this year  parading before judge Phil Topp of Botkins, OH.  In the open division, Peter Vail of Engelwood, FL. took home top honors for exhibiting both grand and reserve grand champion,  Arethusa Northern Lights, a 5-year-old with an outstanding mammary system was honored with the grand champion title. Following her in reserve was the a senior 3-year-old , Buschs Famous Jenna.

Open class junior champion honors were awarded to Leslie & Linda Bruchey’s winter calf, Edge View R Windsor ETV of Westminster, MD.  Peter Vail won the reserve junior champion prize with his fall yearling, Kruses Carter Jive ETV. These heifers topped some very large classes with outstanding quality.

Premier Breeder of the show was A-Joy Swiss, The Evans & Kuhlman Families of Little Meadows, PA and Premier Exhibitor of the show was Peter Vail – Mile High Genetics, Engelwood, FL.

The Best Bred and Owned Cow of the open show was All-Glo Carter Popsicle, the winning 4 Yr Old & Res Sr Champion owned by Justin & Ashley Kaufman, Berlin, PA & the Best Bred and Owned Heifer in the Open show was RAD-ical Famous Tampa, the winning Summer Yearling & Honorable Mention Jr Champion owned by Lindsey Rucks, Okeechobee, FL.

Youth show grand champion honors were awarded to Amelia Somers, Walton, NY, with  her Aged cow, Graystone Kingpin Gitana.  The 4-year-old cow, Way Lyn Biver Diva exhibited by Madison Johnson, Cochranton, PA., was the youth reserve grand champion Brooke Calkins of Little Meadows, PA., exhibited the youth division junior champion, with her summer yearling, A Joy W Nike. Reserve junior champion honors went to Alexis Sherry, New Castle, PA with her winter yearling, Cedar Way Win For Michelle.  

The Best Bred & Owned animal of the Youth show was Brookfield Biver Gretchen, Senior 2 Year Old owned by Eleanor Harrison, Leesburg, VA.

 40 youth participated in some very competitive showmanship classes.  The overall youth showman title was awarded to Grace Strite of Smithsburg, MD, who topped a very competitive Sr showmanship class. The following are placings with youth show results in parenthesis (1):
