· Interpret Shakespeare’s writings in relationship to social, intellectual, and literary contexts.
Examine the social and cultural stereotypes in Shakespeare’s writing.
· Apply generic expectations of dramatic performance, comedy, tragedy, history, and sonnet to Shakespeare’s writing.
· Examine the revolutionary development and presentation of human character in the poetry and drama of Shakespeare.
· Recognize the contemporary relevance and historical specificity of Shakespeare's writings through examination of modern dramatic interpretations, rewritings, and adaptations from diverse cultures
· Relate the characters and situations in Shakespeare's poetry and drama to contemporary life.
· Examine Shakespeare's use of language, using the techniques of literary study.
· Develop, compare, and test alternative interpretations of Shakespeare's texts.
Texts: William Shakespeare: Sonnets, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Othello, Henry IV, Part I, As You Like It, The Merchant of Venice, and selected passages from The Tempest
Requirements:
1. Regular attendance & active participation in discussions.
2. Keeping up-to-date on the reading and bringing a paper copy of the play each time.
3. Eleven quizzes and short assignments.
4. At least one meeting with the instructor.
5. Midterm and Final Exam.
6. Paper or Project
7. Participation in enacting a scene from one of the plays (includes directing).
Grades: 90-100% = A, 88-89% = B+, 80 -87% = B, 78-79% = C+, 70-77% = C, 60-69% = D
A- and B- reserved for special cases. [Possible 480 points]
Quizzes and homework = 10 points each and I drop the lowest [100 points]
Midterm = 50 points
Final = 120 points
Paper or Project = 120 points
Participation in acting scene = 50 (includes thoroughly marked-up scene & write-up)
Class participation, including attendance = 40 points
Notes: You must attend every day or risk being dropped (3 unexcused absences = automatic drop). Please email or text me in advance if you must be absent, so that we can remain in contact. Never copy (plagiarize)! If you use the ideas of anyone else, acknowledge your sources! Plagiarized work will receive 0 points.
