Class Presentation & Paper #5 (Persuasive)
Fixing the Future: Technology, Social Justice, and Ethics
Presentations in class: March 7, 9, 14
Draft of paper due: March 16. Final copy due either before or at time of final: March 21 from 12-3 or March 22 from 4-7
Content:
With a small group of two-five people, you will make a persuasive argument about the evolving future.
Form of Presentations:
You presentations may be in the forms of speeches or powerpoints but also could be done as trials, debates, a play (with characters and a plot), or a story told with illustrations.
Necessary elements of presentations:
1. One reading which your group assigns to the class. You will explicitly refer to that reading during the presentation. You may, if you like, test the other students on their preparedness.
2. Use of one post from your blog.
3. Visuals.
4. A major claim (thesis).
5. Evidence (may be anecdotal) to support your claim.
6. Admission of possible weaknesses in your claim.
7. You will get extra credit personally (not for the group) if you use the language of critical thinking (induction, Toulmin, logical fallacies, etc.)
OR you could do changes at UCSC
Recycling, transportations, wi-fi, bathrooms, classrooms, food, disease
Necessary elements of Paper #5:
900 or more words (3-124 pages) with form as in previous papers. As evidence, you should use material gathered for your presentation. Also required:
a. ethos, pathos and logos (note each in margins)
b. at least one use of anaphora (underlined)
c. a metaphor if you can – not required
d. material which directly appeals to your chosen audience
e. Cover page and Acknowledgments
f. a Works Cited page
g. a methodology paragraph
h. a copy of your questionnaire as an “Appendix”
