Corporate Risk Management
(Senior Capstone)
RMIN 5950 is the capstone course for Risk Management and Insurance undergraduate majors. This course will build on concepts and material you have learned in previous RMIN courses and apply them in a corporate risk management setting. Specifically, we will consider the operational and financial risks faced by firms and the various methods of handling those risks, including loss control, risk retention, corporate insurance programs, and market dynamics. Market simulations will reinforce and apply these core RMIN concepts.
Course material is organized into four modules. At the end of each module, student teams will simulate a market scenario where one “Decider” team will meet with three “Pitcher” teams to discuss the issue at hand. The goal of Pitchers is to make a compelling case for the Decider team to choose their company or strategy. Lectures, guest speakers, in-class assignments, and other work will build towards each of these market simulations. Across the four modules, each student team will act as the Decider once and as Pitchers three times.
Module Specifics
Responsible and effective use of AI is one learning goal for this course. Students are encouraged to use large language models (LLMs) and other AI tools to craft their strategy and prepare for these market simulations. Each student team is required to log their AI prompts. After each market simulation, we will engage in a class-wide discussion of teams’ successes and challenges in using AI to elevate their capabilities.
