[1912] May 11 Farewell to a Popular Townsman. On Thursday night a farewell dinner was tendered to Mr. R. P. Scott, its popular manager of the local branch of the Bank of Adelaide by a number of his friends at the Pretoria Hotel. Mr. Scott is leaving Mannum after a sojourn here of over twelve years to take over the management of the Hindmarsh branch, and his departure will mean a loss to the town and district, as he has at all times identified himself with all matters appertaining to the welfare of the town. As president of the institute he was always an ardent worker, and it was during his term of office, and largely due to his energy, that the now splendid , structure was erected. He was also the first president of the Mannum progress committee formed a couple of year's ago, and was keenly interested in all agricultural matters. About twenty persons sat down to the dinner, including all the leading business men of the town, the gathering being presided over by Mr. David Shearer. After the loyal toast had been honored Mr. S. B. von Doussa ; proposed the toast of Our Guest, and referred in glowing terms to to the many good qualities of the guest as a townsman and a business man, and as a man. He also referred to the deep interest Mr. Scott had always taken in the district, and felt sure that the successful settlement of the river lands was largely due to his practical knowledge and advice. He much regretted Mr. Scott's departure, not only as a townsman but as a personal friend, and he wished Mr. Scott and family happiness and success in their new home. The toast was supported, by Mr. A. O. Faehrmann. The chairman on behalf of the people of the district then presented Mr. Scott with a beautiful framed illuminated adress, which he asked him to accept as a small token of the esteem in which he was held. The chairman's remarks were supported by Messrs. E. W. Walker, T. R. V. Berri-man, R. E. W. May, Capt. J. G. Arnold, M. D. Shearer, O. Darby, and L. G. Opie. Mr. Scott in responding said he felt deep ly the thought of leaving Mannum, and he heartily thanked them for their gift and for the very flattering remarks made concerning him, which he felt were not quite his due. The toast of the New Manager was ably proposed by Dr. Sprod, who heartily welcomed Mr. Rid ings. Mr. Ridings thanked them for their kind welcome, and assured them that he would always do his best for the town, although he recognised the big task set him to follow in Mr. Scott's footsteps. Several other toasts were honored. Town and Trade of Mannum, proposed by Mr. Beriman, and respond ed to by Mr. R. E. W. May. Sports and Recreations of Mannum, proposed by Capt. J. J. Stewart and responded to by Mr. O. Darby. The Army and Navy, by Dr. Sprod, and responded to by Capt. Stewart. The toasts of the Host and Hostess and The Chairman were also drank, and the proceedings closed with the company singing Auld Lang Syne and God Save the King.
Daily Herald (Adelaide, SA : 1910 - 1924), Tuesday 14 May 1912, page 3[1929] Mr. Robert Purdon Scott, whose death occurred on January 9, during a visit to his daughter, Mrs. P. R. Bradley, at Sandringham (Vic), had a wide circle of friends in Adelaide and the country districts. He was born at Kinning Hall, near Hawick (Scotland), and, after being educated at Hawick and the Edinburgh Academy, entered the business of his uncle, Mr. Robert Purdon. banker and solicitor. In 1876 he came to Australia, and after some experience of station life joined the staff of the Bank of Adelaide, with which institution he saw service at Adelaide and as branch manager at Morgan, Kingston, Glenelg, Gumeracha, Mannum, and, finally, at Hindmarsh, from which branch he retired in 1919, after 42 years' service. He took an active interest in all progressive movements in the districts in which he resided during his service with the bank. Whilst at Mannum he did much to further the development of that town and district and the large tract of country east of the Murray River, extending from Renmark to Pinnaroo. For 30 years prior to his death Mr. Scott was closely interested in farming pursuits, having established his sons on farms in the Bridgetown district in Western Australia many years ago. After retiring, he settled on the land near his sons. In 1880 he married Miss Kate Worth, who predeceased him by some years. He leaves three sons — Messrs. Robert W. Scott and William P. Scott, of Bridgetown, Western Australia, and Alex. B. Scott, of Fitzroy Crossing, Western Australia — and four daughters — Mrs. F. R. Bradley and Miss E. M. Scott, of Sandringham, Victoria; Mrs. M. E. Minchin, of Geraldton, Western Australia, and Mrs. B. Wardell, of Bridgetown, Western Australia.
