Obituary.  Mr. Benjamin Baseby [Jnr] died at Mannum on December 24 at the age of 84. He was born at North Adelaide on September 13, 1839, a month after his parents landed at Holdfast Bay from the Somersetshire. He was educated at Mr. S. Berjew's and Mr. E. Wickes' schools, North Adelaide, and at an early age learned the butchering business in a shop his father established in Kermode-street. In 1853 he left for Mannum, and travelled in the spring-cart, drawn by three horses, which then took the mails to Mount Barker. When he arrived the land for 10 miles round was utilised by Mr. W. B. Randell as a cattle run, and to Mr. Baseby belonged the honor of having put in the first crop of wheat grown in the district. After spending some years as a stockrider and becoming well known throughout that part of the country, Mr. Baseby went in for cheesemaking and dairying, and in 1867 opened up business as a butcher in the neighborhood of Mannum. In 1873 he moved into the town, and he had remained in business there ever since. He was the first chairman of the Mannum District Council, and held that office for several years. He was one of the founders of the Mount Torrens Lodge of Oddfellows in 1863, and was also a founder of the local institute, on the committee of which he served for eight years as secretary, and eight years as chairman. He was a member of the Agricultural Society from its inception, and interested himself in all public matters for the benefit of the town. In 1863 he married Louisa, daughter of the late Mr. George Mason, of Forest Range, and he had five sons and three daughters.
