[1910] Man of Mannum. Capt J. G. Arnold; now the biggest buyer of wheat operating on the river, was not always thus. This big-bodied, big-hearted Swede narrates, with quiet pride, that he was lumping wheat, and carrying his thousand bags a day 15 years ago. Eleven years ago, he remarks, he came to Loxton and took away all the wheat from the district in one barge. To-day it takes a fleet six months to do as much.
A year ago, when the writer visited Mannum, he was much impressed with the stamp of men there met with. There was something big about them. You couldn't talk with Mr Walker, of the Mannum mills, for example, without feeling that he was a notable personality; and in Messrs Shearer and Scott, Mannum possessed citizens whose inventive genius was bringing laurels to the State.
I met Capt Arnold for the first time, at Loxton, last week, and found him also of the giant breed. From him I learned that Mannum is in no danger of dying of inanition. Shearers have just finished a new workshop capable of housing 600 men (at a cost of about £10,000). This firm has already turned out 600 strippers and 17,000 dozen ploughshares, this year. A new club house and institute are in course of erection, as well as 30 houses (Capt Arnold himself is building six.) An estimate of the cost of the buildings now being erected places it at about £35,000. One of the institutions of the place is a rowing club, which possesses three 4-oared and one 8-oared boats.
Renmark Pioneer (SA : 1892 - 1913), Friday 14 October 1910, page 8[1912] Captain J. G. Arnold, the popular President of the Mannum rowing and athletic club (which held its second annual regatta last week) and one of the best known men connected with the river trade in South Australia is a native of Gothenburg, Sweden. He may well be said to belong to a nautical family, as seven of his uncles were in charge of vessels trading in different parts of the world. Captain Arnold secured his deepsea masters' certificate when 21 years of age. During his 15 years life on the ocean, he visited nearly every country in the continents in sailing craft or steamers, and about 22 years ago he decided to turn his attention to river navigation in South Australia. He took up residence at Mannum.
Captain Arnold owns the steamboats Wilcannia, Rothbury, and Mundoo among other craft, and also the biggest barges on the river, the Corowie, which was built according to his design at Goolwa recently. Her holding capacity is 8,000bags of wheat, whereas the previous record was 4,500 bags. For four years he was Chairman of the Blanchetown District Council, and he has taken a prominent part in the affairs of the institute, the Agricultural and Horticultural Society and other local activities. His hospitality to the rowing men from Adelaide who attended this year's regatta was unbounded.
