The sports of ancient Rome appear exceedingly violent compared to other cultures at first glance. The events held in their coliseums were often filled with great bloodshed, of either animals or men. They were used to bring honor to their gods and for their own personal entertainment. These games became an integral part of ancient Roman culture, as citizens would often place bets on warriors to earn money, while others made a living buying and selling slaves and Gladiators to fight in the arenas. These practices were eventually outlawed over time.
