I have always wanted to review the small home server which I’ve been using for a couple of years. This server is running Windows Home Server (WHS), the operating system based on Windows Server 2003. This is a good choice for most users who use a Windows-based PC at home.
The main advantage of WHS is that you can easily tune the server, because the system configuration does not differ much from the desktop versions of Windows. Moreover, it is very easy to connect the server to the PC and configure its backup. Also you can install any familiar programs through the Remote Desktop connection. Another undoubted advantage is the support of streaming media files to other devices, for example, media player.
On the other hand, all the disadvantages of Windows are related to a server with WHS on board. The most important issue is the connection of the server to a computer that uses an alternative OS. For example, I have not been able to connect my tablet to the server. Another disadvantage is the lack of RAID support, although the server provides automatic file copying to the second drive.
In conclusion I can say that WHS is a good choice for those who use a Windows PC and are interested in Network Application Server, which manages backups and provides file and printer sharing. In general, TS mini is an excellent home server for people who are not computer experts.
