The Syrian Passengers

The most baffling part of putting together this project was the subject of the passenger list. Over and above the problems with mistakes in spelling names, the lack of a definitive passenger list held by the shipping company and the general chaos, was the issue of the Arab passengers on board. Most of this group were bound for Buenos Aires where they worked as itinerant agricultural labourers and then returned to Lebanon and Syria after the harvest season.

Reflecting the general contempt in which they were held by the Hispanic populations in the region the treatment in the reports of the disaster was more woeful than most. Most had passports in French (both countries of origin being French colonies). Moreover, the passports went down with the ship. Most were probably illiterate or could only spell their names in Arabic. Thus we ended up with a mess of names with no idea which were first or surnames, with vastly different spellings of the same names and some examples where the journalists gave up and used their imagination, figuring that their readers didn't care and that no relatives would be reading local newspapers in Argentina for news of their Arab loved ones.

Thus we have resolved to show the passenger list and the survivor list for this group and you can make up your own minds who survived and who didn't. It seems like their were 118 Arab passengers on board.
