Second Class
Anacleto Bernardi was an Argentine naval conscript. He was being sent back to Buenos Aires from a tour of duty on the Argentine naval sail training vessel, the Sarmiento. The ship had been doing a friendship tour of Mediterranean, when Anacleto and his companion, petty officer Juan Santororo, came down with pneumonia. They were despatched back to Argentina to recuperate. Santororo, who survived became the great hero of the Mafalda, with various parties attributing their survival to his efforts (including wrestling with sharks). He was lauded upon his return to BA and the only book that was written on the Mafalda sinking was related to his exploits. Anacleto Bernardi, was greatly praised as well and he was held up to Argentine school children as a model of courage and patriotism. Motions were passed to rename various schools in his honour.
