I install and maintain Guardian generators for home & business,
readily available for purchase at Lowe's, Home Depot, and many other retail outlets.
And they can be designed, installed, and setup in two different modes:
1. We can pick and choose which circuits and appliances to power with the generator.
2. We can switch the entire home over when the utility fails.
Each method has its pros and cons...
Switching an entire home will require a larger wattage generator and more money, but is more convenient.
Switching just a small portion will allow us to use a smaller, cheaper generator, but something in the home will be left without power.

These generators run on natural gas or LP, usually switched by changing an orifice in the gas line during installation and the generator uses that fuel from that point forward.
One unique request I fulfilled was to make a customer's generator capable or switching from LP to natural gas in the event the LP tank ran dry.
The short video on the left shows that operation and the final result.
It was a simple mater of installing a pressure switch that controlled a pair of electrically controlled gas valves. When the tank runs dry, and the pressure drops below the pressure switch limit setting, the LP gas valve would close, and the natural gas valve would open.
Worked like a champ upon completion. Notice the 2 valves during construction. It was a tight fit to get everything inside the cabinet, but it all worked in the end.
