AIRFIELD HISTORY

Lydeway Field was started back in 2001 when I was looking to purchase a field near to my home to use as an airstrip for the Europa I had just finished building. The field has an east-west orientation and is on flat ground. It is just north of a railway line which is parallel to the strip aiding identification. The 820m prepared strip is smoother than many of the grass airfields around. Initially the Europa was housed in a trailer hangar. After 10 years of use as an airfield Lydeway Field was granted a certificate of lawful use and development which enabled a hangar to be built in 2013. At present we have 8 aircraft based on the strip of various types.

The early years 2001-2012:

The Europa arrived at Lydeway in 2001 having done flight testing at Kemble. An early B747-200 retires at Kemble as G-MIME starts its life (both aircraft have been flown by the author).

The RV8 arrived in 2009 and was repainted in 2011

The clubhouse caravan was acquired via MoD surplus sales in 2010. It originated from nearby MOD Boscombe Down where it was the police mobile unit!

2013 - Lydeway becomes an approved airfield and a NEW hangar is built:

Good Neighbours:

Lydeway Field is fortunate in being supported by some interested and caring neighbours. Residents of the Clock Inn Park, many of whom walk their dogs along the runway, provide a great ‘neighbourhood-watch’ service, often stopping for a friendly chat. Richard, the neighbouring farmer, gives generous and long-standing support and another local farmer maintains the land and surrounding hedgerows in return for cropping the grass. Lydeway Field aviators appreciate and value the generous support of their neighbours and are pleased to arrange local trips for those who like a flight.
