BERLIN CURATOR ADDRESSES VET CLUB

By Ed Kessler

The Veterans Club was honored to have two distinguished guests, Mrs. Baerbel Simon and her husband, Horst Simon, at the club’s Thursday, August 12 monthly meeting. The Simons, house guests of Linc and Donna Landis, established the Berlin Cold War Museum in Berlin Germany. Baerbel is the curator and Horst her assistant.

The Simons described many aspects of Germans living in Berlin during the Cold War as well as the construction and impact of the Berlin Wall on Berliners. Baerbel stated they would not have survived without the help of Britain, France, and the United States, former enemies of Germany in WWII. Baerbel founded the museum as an expression of gratitude to these three countries and to preserve that part of German history. In further pursuit of her goals, she teaches high school students Cold War history awareness courses.

The Club’s next meeting is on September 23, at 7:00 PM in the CHLL. The speaker will be a Coast Guard Officer from the Hampton Roads District. Spouses and guests are cordially invited.
